Limestre: Art, Nature and Industrial History
Limestre between Industry, Church and Art
Limestre combines an unusual industrial history with contemporary art and nature. The upper Limestre valley remained largely uninhabited until Metallurgica Italiana (SMI) first built a new plant there, followed by a workers’ district and finally a church. Anyone wishing to understand the place will encounter a development in which work, housing and religious life followed one another.
On 16 February 1957, the new parish of Limestre was established by a decree of Bishop Longo Dorni. It was assigned the Church of Madonna della Neve (SS. Maria ad Nives), built by SMI.
OCA Oasy in the Oasi Dynamo Nature Reserve
OCA Oasy Contemporary Art and Architecture offers an immersive trail in the heart of the Appennino Pistoiese, within the Oasi Dynamo Nature Reserve, featuring works by contemporary artists and architects. The forest art trail is accessible only as part of a guided tour, which must be booked 48 hours in advance. Guided tours take place at 10:00 and 15:00.
The temporary exhibition “I’m a gardener” by Arne Quinze and the installations in the permanent collection at OCA Oasy Contemporary Art and Architecture can be visited from 25 April to 1 November 2026.
Visits to Oasi Dynamo take place exclusively as guided tours, according to an annual programme and with prior reservation. The visitor centre offers educational activities for schools and families, open-air concerts, art exhibitions, and various activities for body and mind.
Architecture and Access
Kengo Kuma’s Dynamo Pavilion uses winding steel and carbon-fibre structures between the trees. The architecture therefore stands directly alongside the natural environment and complements the trail with an independent design perspective.
A visit to OCA Oasy Contemporary Art and Architecture begins at the Croce di Piteglio car park with an approximately 30-minute walk. The approach is classified as moderately difficult and involves 250 metres of elevation gain. If you include this place in your plans, the walk is therefore part of the visiting experience.
Peaks in the Surrounding Area
The peaks of Monte Tagliola, Cesto del Lupo, le Piaggete and Poggiobello are located around Limestre. They provide several points of reference in the landscape around the town, without requiring a specific hiking route.
Museums and Palace in the Wider Region
The Museo dell'Ospedale del Ceppo, a museum, is also located near Limestre. In the wider region are the Museo dell'Antico Ospedale Del Ceppo and the Percorso Attrezzato Archeologico, both museums, as well as the Palazzo Panciatichi, a palace. The cultural range therefore extends from local history and museums to contemporary art and architecture.
