Buggiano offers you different ways to experience culture, sacred art and easy trails. The historic centre of Borgo a Buggiano is rich in historic and artistic monuments. This focus is complemented by churches, a museum, a cycle and walking path along the Torrente Cessana, and the Fiera in Selva, featuring plants, freshly prepared food and Croccanti.

Historic Centre and Sacred Art

The Museo Parrocchiale del Santissimo Crocifisso opened in 1982. On display are sacred furnishings, liturgical objects and vestments from the 15th to the 19th century. Visitors are asked to make an enquiry in advance.

The Chiesa di Santa Marta is a single-nave, Baroque-style church with rich stucco decoration. Since 1924, it has served as a memorial chapel for those who fell in the war. Its interior also contains a depiction of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary by Alessandro Bardelli.

The Oratorio del Giglio also contributes to the historic character of Borgo a Buggiano. It is located in the immediate vicinity of the historic centre and houses a fresco of the Madonna della Neve from the Giotto school. The oratory is believed to date from the second half of the 16th century. Another stop on the history of sacred art is the Convento di Santa Maria in Selva: it was founded in 1272 and has been run by Augustinian friars since its foundation.

Trails Between Borgo and the Surrounding Area

For an active exploration, the easy La Pineta lungo il Torrente Cessana cycle and walking path is available. It runs south of the railway line between Borgo a Buggiano and Chiesina Uzzanese.

The Sentiero n°5 – Via dei Borghi descends to Borgo a Buggiano, passing the washhouses, and then continues towards Buggiano Castello. If you like to divide your days between local history and physical activity, these two trails can be included in your plans as different areas of focus.

Selva and the Fiera with Its Regional Character

A distinct local character can be found at the Fiera in Selva. On the meadow beside the church of Santa Maria in Selva, plants, flowers and fruit trees of various kinds are displayed. At most stalls, food is prepared fresh; Croccanti are also available. For you, this setting can be a fitting complement to the churches, museum and historic monuments if, alongside art, local products and everyday culture are part of your travel interests.

Buggiano is therefore suitable as a destination for a variety of interests, without any single aspect defining the entire surrounding area: historical art is particularly concentrated in Borgo a Buggiano, trails run along the Torrente Cessana or via the Via dei Borghi, and Selva adds its own distinctive note with plants, food and Croccanti.
