Montecatini Alto: History, Views and Trails

Montecatini Alto is a historic destination for travelers who want to combine churches, traces of fortifications and paths through the countryside. The town brings together different ways of exploring history: Romanesque religious buildings, a fortress, preserved sections of the former town fortifications, a museum of sacred art and a 19th-century theater. This allows you to combine cultural highlights, views and activity in a single travel itinerary.

Historic Sites in the Townscape

The Romanesque church of Santa Maria a Ripa dates back to the 12th century. The Rocca in Montecatini Alto is a large military square and is completely protected by high walls. Porta di Borgo is the only surviving one of the seven gates that once provided access to the Castello.

The Teatro degli Accademici Risorti was built in 1820. Beneath this theater is the medieval Loggia del Parlascio; it is fully preserved and originally served for public gatherings and markets.

Sacred Art and Special Details

The Church of Saints Jacopo and Filippo houses ten life-size terracotta figures of Carmelite saints. In the 18th century, Antonio Zannoni renovated a church in the Baroque style. The Museo di Arte Sacra also houses a reliquary of Saint Barbara made of repoussé silver. A Florentine workshop produced it in the first half of the 15th century. The permanent nativity scene of the Propositura di San Pietro Apostolo is also located there.

The Torre de' Lemmi is also known as the Torre dell'Orologio and is the only surviving trace of the ancient fortifications. It houses a 16th-century clock connected to a 19th-century six-hour dial on the outer wall.

Walking to the Viewpoint

The Terrazza Panoramica encircles the hilltop and offers views of the Valdinievole and the surrounding castles. It can only be reached on foot. If you plan to visit this viewpoint, the walk is therefore part of the access route. The Sentiero Storico per Montecatini Alto is a 19th-century path that runs through green spaces and parallel to the historic route of the Montecatini funicular railway. Along the way, the sections pass through olive groves and wooded areas; the Stations of the Cross are also located there.

The Historic Funicular

The historic funicular was inaugurated on June 4, 1898, and connects Montecatini Alto with Montecatini Terme. It consists of two cars named Gigio and Gigia, which pass each other halfway along the route.
