Montecatini Terme between Thermal Architecture, Art and Mountain-Village History
Montecatini Terme is part of the transnational serial World Heritage Site Great Spa Towns of Europe. For visitors, the town combines Art Nouveau-influenced thermal architecture with art, sacred collections, the original mountain village of Montecatini Alto and a natural cave. This places architectural history, contemporary art, religious heritage and distinctive landscapes side by side in close thematic succession.
Thermal Architecture with Distinctive Motifs
The Terme Tamerici complex is one of the places that best preserves the character of Montecatini shaped by Art Nouveau thermal architecture. The Fontana delle Naiadi stands in the garden of the Terme Tamerici. It consists of bronze naiads on travertine plinths and is a miniature version of the fountain in Piazza Esedra in Rome. The combination of architecture, sculpture and garden makes this site a vivid example of the spa town’s design language.
Terme Excelsior, Terme Leopoldine and Terme Tettuccio are historic sites in the immediate vicinity of Montecatini Terme. Together, they broaden the perspective on the town’s architectural and cultural side without reducing Montecatini to a single theme.
Culture between History and the Present
The Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Montecatini Terme was declared a minor basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1988. Another historic point of reference is the Palazzina Regia: Paoletti designed it in 1777, and it was completed in 1782 for the summer residence of the grand ducal family. The Palazzina Regia preserves Belle Époque-style interiors, furnishings and decorations.
Mo.C.A. – Montecatini Terme Contemporary Art has been an exhibition venue for contemporary art since 2012. The Galleria D'Arte Bentivegna, a museum, is also located in the immediate vicinity of Montecatini Terme. On Viale Verdi stands Airone Rosso, a 3.60-metre-high sculpture made of shaped steel by Fabio De Poli. The cultural spectrum therefore ranges from historic interiors to modern art in public spaces.
Montecatini Alto and Sacred Art
The two red cars of the Montecatini Terme funicular are used to travel up and down between Montecatini Terme and the original mountain village of Montecatini Alto. The Museo di Arte Sacra in Montecatini Alto houses a permanent nativity display as well as liturgical objects. The collection also includes a reliquary of Saint Barbara made of repoussé silver, created in the first half of the 15th century by a Florentine workshop. Montecatini Alto thus complements the thermal architecture with a cultural site defined by sacred and historical themes.
Parks, Peaks and a Cave
The surrounding area also offers specific destinations for a variety of landscape experiences. Parco della Rimembranza is a park in the immediate vicinity of Montecatini Terme, as is the Park of Thermae. Monte Bersano and Poggiobello are peaks in the area surrounding Montecatini Terme. Grotta Maona is a natural cave with two shafts, 20 metres deep and 200 metres long. This combination of parks, peaks and caves adds distinctive natural features to the townscape and offers various starting points if you would like to combine culture and landscape.
