Bibbiano: Architecture, Relic History and Vernaccia
When considering Bibbiano as a travel destination, you encounter several closely interconnected themes: the small settlement is regarded as being situated on a hill, while architectural heritage, religious history, local specialities and Vernaccia di San Gimignano take centre stage. The picture is complemented by castles, museums, mountains and a park in the surrounding area, both nearby and farther afield.
Architecture and the History of the Relic
The Chiesa dei Santi Niccolò e Caterina in Bibbiano is an architectural heritage site. The town is also associated with the history of a relic. A priest brought it to Bibbiano, where it was kept until he decided to hand it over to whichever of the cities of Colle and San Gimignano arrived first to claim it. The delegation from Colle reached Bibbiano before the delegation from San Gimignano and subsequently took the relic to Colle. At the Festa del Sacro Chiodo in Colle, it is carried in a procession every year on the second Sunday in September.
Mountains, Park and Geographical Orientation
For orientation, it is worth distinguishing between the different distances given for the destinations. Monte Maggio and Monte Vasone, both mountains, are located near Bibbiano. Monte Calvarino, also a mountain, lies in the wider regional area. Parco Fluviale, a park, is also located nearby. This distinction makes clear which landscape destinations are assigned to the immediate surroundings and which destination has a broader regional connection.
Vernaccia, Specialities and Accommodation
The wine landscape is also part of the character of the area: the Vernaccia di San Gimignano production route passes through Bibbiano, which is one of the production areas. The restaurant at Taverna di Bibbiano offers typical tastings of local specialities. Taverna has 10 rooms and offers accommodation with breakfast, half board or full board. It also offers guests walks through the lavender fields around the property, as well as a swimming pool. This makes it possible to combine cultural interests with regional cuisine and a stay at a specifically described establishment when planning a trip.
Castles and Museums in the Surrounding Area
The area around Bibbiano offers further specific destinations for a variety of cultural interests. Castello di Fulignano, a castle, is located nearby. Cristallo di Colle Val D'Elsa, a museum, is also nearby. The Museo della Tortura di San Gimignano and the Museo di Criminalogia Medioevale, both museums, are also located in the surrounding area. The selection therefore ranges from a historic building to several museums, each with its own name and focus.
