Pienza: Renaissance, Art and Pecorino

Pienza combines an exceptional Renaissance townscape with museums, regional cheese culture and paths through the Val d’Orcia landscape. Renaissance in the Historic Centre

The historic centre of Pienza was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. It preserves its original Renaissance layout with small squares, deliberately designed sightlines and palaces that relate to the surrounding landscape. Pienza is regarded as an ideal Renaissance town; in the 15th century, Piccolomini directed the town’s urban planning decisions.

One of the defining buildings is the Duomo di Pienza, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta. Bernardo Rossellino designed the cathedral, which was consecrated in 1462. The first floor of Palazzo Piccolomini also houses a museum with historic furnishings, documenting the close connection between Pienza’s history and the Piccolomini family.

Art and History in the Museums

The Diocesan Museum in Palazzo Borgia houses an extensive collection of sacred art. The holdings include paintings, altarpieces, wooden sculptures, tapestries and goldsmiths’ work.

The Museo Archeologico di Pienza offers archaeological insights. Its Etruscan collection comprises more than 500 pieces, most of which date from the Archaic period and come from the necropolis of Borghetto di Pienza. The town’s historical focus therefore extends beyond the Renaissance into its Etruscan past.

Val d’Orcia on Foot or by Bike

Immediately outside Pienza’s town centre, paths lead through broad, gently undulating valleys with cultivated fields, hills and white gravel roads. This landscape can be experienced as a tranquil counterpoint to the squares, palaces and museums. The Via Barlettaia route is suitable for moderately fit cyclists; it follows lightly trafficked gravel roads through vineyards.

Fiera del Cacio and Regional Specialities

The Fiera del Cacio reached its 63rd edition in 2025. It is organised by the Pro Loco and the Contrade; the event normally lasts about a week. The Fiera includes the Gioco del cacio al fuso, a skill game in which a wheel of Pecorino is brought as close as possible to a target fixed in the centre of the square.

The Fiera del Cacio also includes demonstrations of Pecorino cheese production. At La Taverna del Pecorino in Pienza, tastings are offered, along with the sale of Pecorino cheese, salami, extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar.
