Castellina in Chianti lies amid gentle hills with the characteristic landscapes of the Chianti region. Its Rocca, Etruscan archaeology, protected nature and wine traditions give the town several clearly distinct facets.

Rocca, Views and Historic Paths

The historic center is home to the Museo Archeologico del Chianti, housed within a Florentine fortress dating from the 15th century. The Rocca di Castellina in Chianti was designed by Giuliano da Sangallo in the second half of the 15th century. From the top of its tower, the view extends across Castellina and the area around Siena as far as Volterra, and from the mountains of Casentino to Montemaggio. The circular outdoor path along the walls on the Via delle Volte runs between open countryside and the town center and offers panoramic views eastward toward Radda and Gaiole. The Via delle Volte itself is a covered pedestrian passage in the historic center. Access to the Rocca is at ground level through the museum; a lift goes up to the first floor, while the higher levels can only be reached by stairs.

Etruscan Traces around Castellina

The Museo Archeologico del Chianti houses finds from the archaeological areas of Montecalvario and Poggino di Fonterutoli. It offers educational activities for children, young people, families and adults, as well as guided tours tailored to individual needs. Among the most illustrative objects is the reconstruction of the Montecalvario cart: a light two-wheeled currus with iron nine-spoke wheels and decoration made of bronze and iron sheets.

The Etruscan tomb of Montecalvario is just a short walk from Castellina’s historic center. It has four burial chambers oriented toward the north, south, east and west; each consists of a main chamber and side cells. The terrain is rough and unsuitable for children or people with disabilities. In Fonterutoli, the Etruscan necropolis of Poggino lies in a small woodland. It comprises five burials, including four chamber tombs and one box tomb, and is freely accessible. From Castellina, it can be reached via the SS 222 Chiantigiana state road toward Siena; it is located near the village of Fonterutoli. Some of the finds from Poggino are displayed in the atrium of the medieval Rocca.

Churches and Specific Access Conditions

The Romanesque church of San Lorenzo stands in Tregole. It is accessible only by stairs; there is no ramp for people with disabilities, and there are no side entrances. The Church of San Salvatore also reflects a clear historical turning point: after being destroyed during the Second World War, it was rebuilt in the Neo-Romanesque style.

Cypresses, Animals and Landscape

In the locality of Sant’Agnese, the Riserva Naturale Senese Bosco di Sant’Agnese protects an extensive cypress grove. Its origins date back approximately ten centuries. The nature reserve provides roosting places for small birds and is home to nocturnal birds of prey as well as mammals such as porcupines, martens and weasels.

Pilgrimage Route, Festivals and Wine

The Via Romea Sanese pilgrimage route from Florence to Siena passes through Castellina in Chianti as a historic stopping point. Local festival culture includes the Fiera del Cocomero, an August festival of rural origin that has been held in Castellina since the post-war period. Calici di Stelle takes place in summer around 10 August and combines gastronomic tastings with stargazing. Wine enthusiasts can visit local wine shops or cellars; tastings are often accompanied by cold cuts from the Cinta Senese breed.
