Castiglione D'orcia: History, Trails and Landscape

Castiglione D'orcia is located in the UNESCO World Heritage landscape of the Val d'Orcia. The municipal area is predominantly characterized by urban structures and architectural complexes from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

Fortresses and Towers: Access, Views and the Historic Centre

The Rocca Aldobrandesca was built to monitor the road from Monte Amiata into the Val d'Orcia and onward towards the Maremma. It can be reached from the town centre and is one of the landmarks of the village of Castiglione D'orcia. A recently completed restoration lasting more than twenty years has made the Rocca accessible again.

The Torre di Tentennano also combines historic architecture with a tangible walking experience. It can be reached from the village's hilltop via a footpath of about 300 metres. From its terrace, the view extends from Monte Amiata to Monte Cetona. The Torre di Tentennano hosts art exhibitions. At about 300 metres, the footpath to the Torre is considerably shorter than the approximately 25-kilometre stage.

Castiglione D'orcia on the Via Francigena: Stage, Ascent and Detour

The Via Francigena crosses the municipal area of Castiglione D'orcia on Stage 35 over approximately 25 km. The official route climbs from Bagno Vignoni for about 3 km towards Castiglione D'orcia. The town can also be reached via a 400 m detour from the official route of the Via Francigena. The approximately 400 m detour into the town is therefore shorter than the approximately 3 km ascent from Bagno Vignoni.

Squares, Churches and Art: Buildings and Exhibitions

Piazza Vecchietta forms the centre of the village of Castiglione D'orcia. Santa Maria Maddalena is a Romanesque stone church. The Church of Santi Stefano e Degna is the town's most important religious building. The local art scene also includes the Sala d'Arte San Giovanni, located in the former Oratory of San Giovanni Battista.

Landscape, Protected Area and Regional Specialties

The southern boundary of the Ripa d'Orcia Regional Nature Reserve runs along the riverbed within the municipal area of Castiglione D'orcia. The Strada del Vino d'Orcia, which passes through Castiglione D'orcia, is also important for regional orientation. The area's extra virgin olive oil is a product certified as DOP Terre di Siena.
