Thermal Waters and Limestone Formations

The hot thermal waters of Bagni San Filippo have been known since antiquity. The water of the Fosso Bianco is sulfurous, sulfate-rich, calcium-rich and magnesium-rich, as well as hyperthermal. In a lush forest, the thermal waters have created white limestone formations, small waterfalls and warm pools. Along the stream, the first pools of the Fosso Bianco contain clear and very hot water.

One of the most striking formations is the Balena Bianca, a large block of limestone formed by sediments from the thermal waters. It must not be touched or climbed; bathing near it is also prohibited. The woodland path begins in the center of Bagni San Filippo. A natural path takes you to the Balena Bianca in about ten minutes.

San Filippo: Grotto, Church and Tradition

The Grotta di San Filippo Benizi is a destination for pilgrims and is carved into a large block of limestone. The Grotta San Filippo contains an 18th-century plaster bust of the saint and a wooden crucifix that, according to tradition, was carved by San Filippo. The site thus combines religious memory with an unusual stone setting.

The Chiesa di San Filippo is located in the center of Bagni San Filippo. It was rebuilt using the stones of the former Church of San Filippo and houses three stucco statues of San Filippo Neri, San Filippo Apostolo and San Filippo Benizzi. For a tour of the town, the church provides an independent cultural point of reference.

In 1269, San Filippo Benizi sought refuge in the area of Bagni San Filippo. The traditional festival Festa di San Filippo Benizzi honors San Filippo Benizi, the patron saint of the thermal complex of Bagni San Filippo. Alongside the landscape, these associations also give the name San Filippo a historical and religious dimension.

What to Consider When Planning

When choosing a hotel for Bagni San Filippo, you can consciously decide what to focus on during your stay: the white limestone formations, the woodland path and the waterscape draw attention to nature and geology; the grotto and church lead to pilgrimage history, art and religious tradition. The Terme San Filippo thermal complex is closed due to renovation work. The natural landscape and the waterscape described there should therefore not be equated with confirmed bathing operations at the complex.
