San Lorenzo a Merse Between Nature and History

San Lorenzo a Merse brings together nature trails, river landscapes, and historic traces. The second MTB/e-bike stage of the Itinerario Naturalistico Toscano, titled “Cercando fiumi, terre e roccia,” begins in the village. This creates a destination where cycling and hiking experiences meet visible evidence of history.

Cycling Through the Alto Merse

The second MTB/e-bike stage of the Itinerario Naturalistico Toscano passes through the Alto Merse Regional Nature Reserve. From San Lorenzo a Merse, it also follows a low-traffic road into the Tocchi State Nature Reserve. Both aspects make the stage interesting for travel planning that combines nature and activity.

Hiking on the RSMM2 Trail

The RSMM2 Gonna 2–Ricausa hiking trail is approximately 11 kilometers long, with 336 meters of ascent and 386 meters of descent. It runs entirely within the Alto Merse Nature Reserve. The trail begins at a junction with Provincial Road 53 from San Lorenzo a Merse toward Monticiano.

Forests and River Landscapes

The Merse River is still home to four fish species endemic to the Tusco-Latial district. The forests along the Itinerario Naturalistico Toscano provide suitable habitats for numerous birds and mammals, including the rare wildcat (Felis silvestris). This gives you access to a natural environment in which water, forest, and wildlife are closely connected with the trails.

Mills and Traces of Ironworking

The RSMM2 Gonna 2–Ricausa route leads to the remains of the Molino Ricausa. The water mill was built in the 14th century; hydraulic installations, millstones, and utility buildings are still visible. The route also passes Ferriera, a former ironworks site. An ironworks operated there until the 17th century, and slag remains have been preserved.

Places of Interest in the Village

San Lorenzo a Merse is considered a village with a noteworthy castle. In the Borgo San Lorenzo a Merse, the Chiesa della Misericordia is also highlighted as one of the places of interest. These two sites complement the natural experiences with a cultural perspective on the historic center.

Navigating Between the Routes

One possible connection from San Lorenzo a Merse to Podere Gonna runs westward along the SP 32. The Itinerario Naturalistico Toscano leads from San Lorenzo a Merse to the farmsteads of Cerreto a Merse and then northward via Pornella toward Brenna. This allows you to take different route options and landscape sections into account when planning your days.
