Armenzano between Village Character and Hiking Landscape

Armenzano is situated on the crest of a hill at the entrance to the Fosso-Marchetto valley. Its location combines a clearly recognizable settlement form with paths leading into the landscape of Monte Subasio. Armenzano is a compact, almost circular feudal settlement that developed during the communal era. Those who want to experience a small Italian village not merely as a place to stay overnight, but as an independent part of their journey, will therefore find several interconnected themes here: historic village character, religious art, living tradition and hiking routes.

Ring Walls and the Church of Madonna della Natività

A well-preserved ring of walls characterizes Armenzano. Armenzano is also home to a single-nave, Romanesque-looking church dedicated to Madonna della Natività. The church interior preserves traces of frescoes. These include an Annunciation with God the Father giving a blessing in a section of clouds surrounded by angels.

Hiking on Historic Paths

One specific way to connect Armenzano with the surrounding landscape is the Valtopina–Armenzano hiking route. It is 14.8 kilometers long, takes six hours and is classified as difficulty level E for hikes.

When you leave Armenzano on foot, Sentiero 59 leads through the forests towards Notiano. Sentiero 55 runs entirely along the old livestock trail that the residents of Armenzano used to drive their herds to the summit pastures of Monte Subasio. On Sentiero 55, slightly above 1,212 meters, you come across the Mortaro delle Troscie. The circular karst sinkhole is approximately 50 meters deep and around 160 meters in diameter.

Mill, Nativity Play and Tradition of Light

Molino Buccilli is the only historic mill still in operation in Parco del Monte Subasio.

During the Presepe Vivente di Armenzano, the community brings the events surrounding the birth of Jesus back to life in the medieval village. The Presepe Vivente di Armenzano includes the Annunciation to Mary, the visit to Elisabetta, Herod, the census and the arrival of the Three Wise Men. An outdoor nativity scene in Armenzano can be traced back to the 1980s; it is illuminated exclusively with torches and candles.
