Azzano: Discover History, Churches and Mills

Azzano is characterized by several clearly defined historical landmarks. Former fortifications, churches and the Torre di Azzano mill complex make the town appealing to travelers who want to combine architecture, history and local traditions.

Azzano's Location

For geographical orientation, Azzano lies 1.5 kilometers west of Ponte di Azzano (Marroggia). The bridge is located on the Spoleto–Assisi cycle route. This specific distance helps you place the town within your travel plans and choose a suitable area in which to stay.

Fortified Settlement with Medieval Traces

The former Castello di Azzano stood directly beside a Roman side road that led from Spoleto across the plain of the Torrente Marroggia to Trevi. The structure had the typical square layout of the plain. A high surrounding wall encloses a small cluster of houses dating from the 15th to the 16th century, arranged around a small central square.

Azzano was initially an open settlement and was fortified with walls toward the end of the 14th century, possibly in 1378. The town belonged to the system of fortified settlements in the Spoletan plain that emerged after the Albornoz restoration. Anyone interested in the development of Italian townscapes will therefore find not only individual buildings here, but also the historical context of a fortified settlement.

Churches from Several Centuries

The old Romanesque Chiesa di San Lorenzo probably dates from the 11th century and has been documented as property of Bovara Abbey since 1178.

The Chiesa di Santa Maria del Soccorso (Madonna del Soccorso) was built between the 11th and 12th centuries in Azzano, a hamlet of Spoleto. The façade and interior were altered in the 17th century; the church probably received its present dedication at that time.

Torre di Azzano and Historic Mills

The medieval Torre di Azzano was built by the people of Spoleto in 1400 to defend the municipal boundaries and was established as a fortified outpost facing Castello di Beroide.

The Torre di Azzano complex comprises two separate facilities: a grain mill and an oil mill. Both are powered by water from a diversion channel and supplied by two Pelton-type hydraulic turbines; both facilities have been documented since the 18th century.

Christmas Program 2025

The City of Spoleto's Christmas program for 2025 included the second edition of the “Mercatini di Natale di Azzano.” Held from December 6 to 8, 2025, it was dedicated to Christmas traditions, handicrafts and local specialties; stalls offering mulled wine, sweets and typical Umbrian specialties were planned. The program also included “Arrivano i mercanti di Azzano,” a Christmas market featuring Christmas music and light refreshments provided by the Pro Loco di Azzano.
