Camerata between the Castello, Churches and the Via Amerina

The Castello and Historic Character

The Castello di Camerata was seized and fortified by the Ghibellines in 1472. After Pope Alexander VI abandoned his announced plans to destroy it, the Castello became a popular retreat in the following centuries because of its impressive location and the surrounding forests, and developed into an agricultural village. The remains of the complex include the doorpost of an entrance gate, several portals and fragments of walls. These remnants give the castle site a tangible historical dimension, without implying anything about its current use or accessibility.

Churches, Architecture and Sacred Art

The Chiesa di Santa Maria della Neve is also known as Santa Maria in Arcionibus and is an old parish church near Camerata. Its interior has a single nave; the walls are made of unplastered limestone, and the building has a plastered barrel vault. In the apse above the altar is a severely damaged and retouched fresco of the enthroned Virgin and Child, crowned by seraphim. The fresco is attributed to the 16th century.

The Chiesa di Santa Caterina d’Alessandria was completely renovated in 1911. It has a neo-Gothic front façade and a distinctive bell tower with a medieval appearance. The church is located within the walls of the Castello di Camerata. Its façade bears the Lastra ai Caduti di Camerata di Todi nella Grande Guerra, a marble plaque commemorating the people from Camerata who fell in the First World War.

The Via Amerina, Plateau and Forests

The history of the routes is also part of Camerata’s character. The Via Amerina trail network included a branch toward the Camerata area. According to the waypoint, the route follows the restored Via Amerina and passes a first ancient bridge; a possible branch to a water source and the old Olivieri mill is also planned.

A published e-bike route begins in the village of Camerata and leads onto the plateau and through the forests as far as Mestaiola.
