Discover Capodacqua: Ancient Traces on Monte Subasio

Capodacqua lies on the southern slopes of Monte Subasio and combines a local history shaped by springs with Roman and medieval traces. This makes it a destination whose special features lie less in a single attraction than in the combination of landscape, archaeology, and historic buildings.

A Place of Springs and Ancient Traces

The name Capodacqua refers to the large number of springs in the area. This characteristic is directly connected to the identity of the place and gives the landscape its own historical significance. At least five Latin stone inscriptions found in the area testify that Roman settlements existed in the vicinity of Capodacqua.

Another important archaeological discovery is located on property near the small church of Santa Maria della Speranza: a large Roman necropolis was discovered there. The surviving Latin inscriptions from Capodacqua are displayed at the Museo Romano di Assisi. Those interested in Umbria's Roman past can therefore also view the local finds in a museum context.

Castles Between Capodacqua and Monte Subasio

Behind Capodacqua stood the medieval castle of Sassorosso; today, only its ruins remain. Above the village of Capodacqua di Assisi are also the remains of two medieval border castles belonging to the Assisi area, including Sasso Palombo.

The remains of Castello di Sasso Palombo are located on private property and are therefore not accessible. This restriction is important for your planning: the structure forms part of Capodacqua's historic surroundings, but cannot be planned as an accessible excursion destination.

San Benedetto Abbey lies in the area of Capodacqua di Assisi, among the forests on the southern slope of Monte Subasio, at an elevation of 781 meters above sea level. Monte Subasio is located in the immediate vicinity of Capodacqua. Monte delle Croci, Sasso di Pale, and Monte Serrone are also in the surrounding area.

The MTB 21 mountain bike route reaches Capodacqua at kilometer 25.9. At Capodacqua, the MTB 21 route leaves the paved road and leads uphill through olive groves. The village is therefore connected to a specific section of a route whose course alternates between paved road, ascent, and olive groves.

The ancient Temple of Minerva site and several palaces are also located in the vicinity of Capodacqua: Palazzo Gerardi, Palazzo Jacobilli - Carrara, and Palazzo Trinci.
