Campi: Hiking, Churches and Living Tradition

In terms of landscape, the Campi Vecchio–Visso route passes through the Val Majore and opens out onto the broad meadows near the Casali dell’Acquaro. A hike from Campi begins at the Church of San Salvatore and follows the path marked with number 501.

Hillside Fortresses and Churches with Frescoes

Campi Alta is a typical hillside fortress overlooking the village. Campi Alto preserves the entrance area and a tower of a typical hillside fortress. Both references draw attention to the architectural forms that characterize the place, without requiring an extensive visit. In Monti Sibillini National Park, San Salvatore in Campi di Norcia is one of the important buildings integrated into the landscape. The Church of San Salvatore di Campi is characterized by 15th-century frescoes and was one of the former possessions of Sant’Eutizio Abbey.

The Church of Madonna della Piazza was founded in 1351. To this day, it preserves a large part of its decoration and its 15th- and 16th-century frescoes. For visitors interested in culture, this site therefore offers a clear chronological reference: its foundation can be traced back to the 14th century, while the surviving furnishings and decoration primarily reflect the following centuries.

The Hermitage of Madonna di Santa Croce dates from the 15th century, is built entirely of stone and has a small adjoining church.

Piantamaggio in Campi di Norcia

Piantamaggio is regarded in Campi di Norcia as a historic tradition of the town and the entire Norcia area. During Piantamaggio, a selected “maggio” is carried to the village square.
