Foligno between urban history and landscape

Foligno presents itself as a city with a historic center and a diverse range of cultural attractions. The present-day urban area has an elliptical, characteristically oval shape. Its focal point is Piazza della Repubblica, where the cathedral and the duomo face each other. For your initial orientation, a city walking route starts at the railway station and leads through Porta Romana into the historic center.

Palazzi and archaeological insights

At the center is Palazzo Trinci, one of the most important late Gothic secular buildings in central Italy. Its museum complex includes the Pinacoteca, the Museo Archeologico, the Museo dell’Istituzione Comunale and the Museo Multimediale dei Tornei, delle Giostre e dei Giochi. The Museo Archeologico in Palazzo Trinci displays finds dating from the 7th or 6th century BC to the 3rd century AD.

Another archaeological perspective is offered by the Museo Archeologico di Colfiorito. It presents finds relating to the pre-Roman culture of the Plestines, an Umbrian people who settled in pre-Roman times on the karst plateaus of the Colfiorito Apennine upland. The exhibition traces their history from their origins to Romanization and uses materials from sanctuaries, tombs, settlements and cities.

The Museo della Stampa is housed in the old Palazzo Orfini and preserves evidence of paper production and publishing in Foligno from the 15th century to the present day. Among its notable pieces is a printed page from Dante’s Commedia dating from 1472, depicting the eleventh canto of Paradiso. The Museo Capitolare Diocesano contains around 40 works, including two busts from the workshop of Gian Lorenzo Bernini.

The Palude di Colfiorito is a wetland where water remains throughout the year. It is protected as a regional park, a Ramsar site and a European Special Area of Conservation (SAC). In Parco Regionale di Colfiorito, you can hike and go mountain biking along numerous trails; it is also suitable for birdwatching and nature photography.

Festivals, cuisine and regional craft history

The local character is particularly evident during the Giostra della Quintana. This historical re-enactment of a 17th-century jousting tournament was created in 1946; the ten districts of Foligno compete against one another at the Campo de li Giochi. During the Giostra, the taverns of the ten districts in the historic center serve traditional Umbrian dishes and local wines. The I Primi d’Italia festival offers tastings, cooking classes, culinary demonstrations and a food market.

The archaeological-industrial textile park of Rasiglia preserves the work processes and elements required for traditional textile production—from sheep shearing to the finished product. It documents the transition from handlooms through hydraulic looms to the mechanical Jacquard loom. Since the end of the 16th century, the Via Lauretana, with its variants and branches, has formed the main pilgrimage route to the Santa Casa of Loreto.
