Pian di Marte between nature, trails and history
Pian di Marte is a destination for travelers who want to combine landscapes with local history. Part of the Boschi di Pischiello - Torre Civitella protected area faces Pian di Marte and has a northeast orientation. North of Passignano, the area protects a sandstone hill range ranging in elevation from 300 to 730 meters. Forests, pastureland and historical traces give the area a variety of facets.
Hilly country between forest and plain
The vegetation of the protected area includes thermophilous and thermo-xerophilous forest and pasture plant communities that are characteristic of western Umbria. In Pian di Marte, the Azienda Agricola Moretti extends over approximately 400 hectares. This area includes forests, wooded pastures and arable land in the hills and plain. As a result, the landscape alternates between wooded sections, open pastures and areas shaped by agriculture.
The AATV “Castel Rigone” hunting reserve is associated with the Azienda Agricola Moretti in Pian di Marte. It covers 270 hectares of irrigated plain, wetlands on the valley floor, cultivated areas and hilly pastures. These different landscape forms complete the picture of an area where natural environments and managed land lie closely alongside one another.
Cycling tours and trails through the landscape
The Le 4 Cime cycling tour reaches Pian di Marte via a five-kilometer climb that passes through Crocicchie. The tour combines the Gosparini, Lisciano-Crocicchie and Trecine climbs with Magione Montecolognola as the fourth climb.
The trails around Pian di Marte also pass through a variety of terrain. After several hairpin bends, one trail leads to Torre di Fiume at an elevation of 424 meters. Along the wooded slope, a trail separates this side from the fields and pastures of Pian di Marte. Those wishing to compare cycling and hiking options will therefore find different trail routes and landscape views here to help plan their day.
Church and local traditions
The first documented mention of the church of San Cristoforo in Pian di Marte dates back to 1136. The church stands on the summit of Poggio and overlooks the plain of Pian di Marte.
Fonte di Annibale, also known as Fonte d'argento, is regarded in local tradition as one of the historical landmarks of Pian di Marte. Casa delle vedove is associated with the wives of fallen legionaries. Local historical traditions also connect Pian di Marte with Hannibal's pursuit of Roman survivors after the Battle of Lake Trasimene.
