Village History and Churches

Pianello developed in the 14th century, when the settlement moved into the valley and the higher-lying Castrum Arnae castle became increasingly depopulated. This development explains the historical connection between the present-day village and its former elevated location.

The present-day Chiesa di San Biagio was built in 1875, after the former Chiesa dei Santi Biagio e Valentino had been demolished. The historic parish church in Pianello originated from the Pieve di San Valentino, built in the plain and later given the name Santi Biagio e Valentino.

Pianello’s square also has a long public history: since the Middle Ages, important markets have been held there, attended by merchants and farmers from the surrounding areas.

Nature and Routes Around Pianello

Pianello is a small rural center with examples of rural architecture and almost untouched natural areas. Along the Chiascio, an attractive riverside route offers the opportunity to take a walk close to the river.

The Sentiero dei Banditi e Briganti begins at Piazza Piediluco in Pianello and ends in Civitella d’Arna at the small square by the Church of San Lorenzo. The route leads to three castles and other points of interest, identified by appropriate signposting.

There is a water source in Pianello on the Valfabbrica–Perugia stage of the Via di Francesco. Further water sources can be found in the towns along the route: Ripa, Ponte Valleceppi, Pretola, and Perugia. On the variant of this route, you first reach Pianello, where you can take a break and refresh yourself before continuing on to Castello di Ripa.

For cycling travelers, Pianello is one of the noteworthy places along the 64.2-kilometer Itinerario 5 – Ponte San Giovanni e Fratticiola Selvatica. The challenging panoramic cycling route includes paved and gravel sections and is designated for gravel bikes, mountain bikes, and e-bikes.
