Ponte Centesimo on the Topino – ancient road and hiking trails
Between the Topino and the Via Flaminia
Ponte Centesimo is defined above all by its location on the Topino River and the historic Via Flaminia. In Ponte Centesimo, the ancient route crosses the Topino; in the surrounding valley, it follows the natural course of the river and runs through a narrow valley there. This gives you a destination where landscape and transport history can be experienced together at close range.
Historical traces along the ancient long-distance road
The Via Flaminia was built in 220 BC at the behest of the censor Caio Flaminio and connected Rome with the areas along the Adriatic coast. The bridge at Ponte Centesimo stood on the ancient Via Flaminia exactly at the 100th milestone from Rome. From Ponte Centesimo, the road entered the territory of the Favonienses, present-day Valtopina. The historical significance of the place is therefore not determined by a single structure, but by the interplay of the river crossing, the long-distance road and the regional transition.
Pieve Fanonica and the cultural history of the surrounding area
North of Ponte Centesimo on the SS3, the church in Pieve Fanonica is considered a 12th-century building erected on the site of a pagan temple. This connection broadens the view beyond the river crossing itself and makes the surrounding area interesting for travelers who wish to consider ancient transport routes and sacred history together.
Hiking routes of different lengths
If you are traveling on foot, Sentiero 360 is accessible from Ponte Centesimo station. After crossing the bridge over the Topino River, a very short section of the old Via Flaminia leads toward Valtopina. Another challenging hiking trail runs between the Eremo delle Carceri in Assisi and Ponte Centesimo via Sasso Piano and requires a full day. The range of hiking options therefore extends from a short, clearly described access route to a full-day tour.
Cycling connection and a past sporting event
The cycling connection also has a clear temporal reference: on March 13, 2025, the Ciclovia Flaminia near Palazzaccio was interrupted because of the closure of a railway crossing. Once construction work was completed, the planned bypass at Palazzaccio was intended to allow bicycle traffic from Foligno to Ponte Centesimo again. The Memorial Calcagnoli took place on Sunday, September 6, on the Topino River in Ponte Centesimo; a competition course was set up there for this sporting event.
Ponte Centesimo as a place to stay
If you are planning a hotel stay in Ponte Centesimo, you can choose the location according to your specific interests: the crossing of the Topino, the route of the Via Flaminia, access to Sentiero 360 and the connections to Valtopina, Assisi and Foligno. This allows you to shape your stay around cultural history, hiking or several interests, without reducing Ponte Centesimo to just one travel idea.
