Monte Petriolo between Hills and River Valley

Monte Petriolo Castle has an elliptical ground plan. Since 1942, the castle has housed a permanent nativity scene. The religious buildings include the parish churches of Santo Stefano and San Lorenzo, which date from the 14th century. The bell tower of Santo Stefano and San Lorenzo, set apart from the church building, has a distinctive crenellated crown made of red bricks and features biforas, that is, divided windows. Together, the castle, churches and bell tower create a varied architectural setting for exploring cultural history.

Madonna delle Grazie Outside the Castle Walls

Madonna delle Grazie is a rural church from the 15th century located outside the castle walls. It was built around a wayside shrine dedicated to the Virgin Mary with a votive fresco, which is now located on the main altar. If you do not want to limit your exploration of historic architecture to the fortified area, Madonna delle Grazie is one of Monte Petriolo’s distinctive points of interest.

Folk Festival and Typical Dessert

“C'era una volta Montepetriolo” is a recurring folk festival in Montepetriolo. Monte Re is a typical dessert made from cornflakes and dark chocolate, covered with whipped cream.
