Ponte Pattoli on the Tiber: Routes, History and Villa Taticchi

Ponte Pattoli lies on the Tiber and combines a river landscape with traces of history. The Tiber passes through the entire area. At the same time, the town is partly situated on the eastern slopes of Monte Tezio and extends partly along the riverbed.

Hiking and cycling along the Tiber

The Florence–Perugia–Assisi route is a trekking and pilgrimage trail. Along the Tiber, it runs from Ponte Pattoli via Villa Pitignano to Ponte Felcino. Those travelling on foot can plan Ponte Pattoli as the starting point for this section of the Tiber. For the hike, a separate starting and finishing point must be planned if the route is to run from Ponte Pattoli to Ponte Felcino. Those who only wish to walk part of the section can choose their own destination point between Ponte Pattoli and Ponte Felcino.

At Ponte Pattoli, the Ciclovia del Tevere crosses the Tiber and then continues along the left bank on a dedicated combined cycle and footpath. For cyclists, the crossing is therefore followed by a riverside section with two explicitly connected types of path. At Ponte Pattoli, the river crossing, the path along the left bank and the historic buildings can all be taken into account together when planning a trip.

Historical traces around Ponte Pattoli

The bridge at Ponte Pattoli historically served as a link between different areas. Bridges in the area had already fulfilled this connecting function since antiquity. In the village of Prozzonchio, Castello Rustichelli stands along the road that runs along the right bank of the Tiber, near Ponte Pattoli. Castello Rustichelli is located on the right bank, while Villa Taticchi is situated on the left bank of the Tiber.

The history of the town includes the still-visible sections of the walls of the former castle of Ponte Pattoli. The Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta stands outside the old castle walls, which have now disappeared. It was built as a new church between 1787 and 1795. Its interior decoration was created in 1931 by the painters Piero Migliorati and Nicola Biagini, who came from Perugia.

Villa Taticchi on the left bank of the Tiber

Villa Taticchi lies approximately 100 metres from the left bank of the Tiber. Its core is a medieval tower from the 14th century with four rooms arranged one above the other. The property is currently under the protection of, or subject to heritage restrictions imposed by, the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage. The current protection status belongs to the present day, while the medieval tower, as the historic core of Villa Taticchi, dates back to the 14th century.

Today, Villa Taticchi welcomes guests to its restaurant and guest rooms, as well as to events held in the historic residence. The restaurant offers a menu featuring seasonal ingredients and ingredients sourced according to the “Km0” principle.
