The Castello di Poreta and views over the plain

The Castello di Poreta is an almost completely preserved polygonal enclosure. It stands at an altitude of 470 metres at the top of a slope and offers views across the entire plain between Spoleto and Trevi. The complex thus combines its polygonal form with its elevated position at the top of the slope. The expansive view over the plain is as much a part of the Castello as its character as a fortified complex.

A fortified village with a remarkable church

Poreta became a fortified village towards the end of the 13th century. The former Church of San Cristoforo was later dedicated to Santa Maria della Misericordia because it housed a miraculous image of the Madonna that allegedly emerged undamaged from the earthquakes. The high altar and the presbytery vault of Santa Maria della Misericordia are signed works by Fabio Angelucci da Mevale from 1575. San Cristoforo is the former name of the church; Santa Maria della Misericordia is the later dedication. The image of the Madonna is part of the reason for this dedication.
