San Sisto between culture, chocolate and green spaces

San Sisto is a populous district of Perugia with a theater, historic churches, public green spaces and event venues.

Chocolate with insights into its production

A special highlight is the Casa del Cioccolato Perugina. Its tour combines the Historical Museum, a product tasting and a factory visit. From a raised walkway, visitors can observe factory production according to the production schedule. The museum gallery also presents more than 100 years of Italian chocolate making. This means that, in one place, you can encounter both the history of the product and its production and tasting.

Theater, churches and local history

The Teatro Bertolt Brecht was inaugurated in 2009 in the populous district of San Sisto. It is located next to the Biblioteca Sandro Penna, and together they form a cultural hub. La Fontemaggiore – Teatro Stabile di Innovazione is responsible for the theater’s artistic, organizational and technical management and works in children’s and contemporary theater.

The Chiesa della Santa Famiglia di Nazareth was built for the 2000 Jubilee on the western edge of the San Sisto district in Perugia. Its complex includes a liturgical hall, a rectory, a youth center and an oratory. In the liturgical hall, four columns support a tiburium. Beneath it is an altar made of eucalyptus wood, above which a large skylight is arranged in the roof. The Chiesa dell’Annunciazione is an old complex in San Sisto di Perugia and dates from the 14th to the 17th century.

The original historic center of San Sisto along the old Via Pievaiola is known as “Il Toppo” and included the former parish church. Thus, newer cultural venues and older architectural traces stand side by side, without confining the district to just one period.

Events and open spaces

The Carnevale di San Sisto reached its 45th edition in 2026 and included two parades through the district. The adjacent open spaces of San Sisto, which are intended to serve as a public park, are used for the annual event “Sagra delle sagre.” For everyday orientation, the Area verde dei Pini is also part of the local landscape: the public green space is used daily by families, children, people engaging in sports and older people.

Getting around and local routes

The main road access from Perugia to San Sisto is via Strada Pievaiola, which is also known as Viale San Sisto. Near the southern access area there is a railway station on the Perugia–Terontola line. Via Gaetano Donizetti also has a recently constructed cycle path that runs alongside road traffic and serves the residential area.

Green spaces and sports

Twenty-five larger trees and 25 shrubs were planted in the new green space at Parco dello Zodiaco; an insect hotel was also installed there. Sports are also represented by two pitches: Campo calcio S.Sisto on Via Bach is associated with S.s.d. Junior San Sisto, while the Campo calcio S.Sisto football pitch on Via Donizetti is associated with A.s.d. Academy San Sisto 2023.
