Piazza del Popolo forms the center of the medieval and modern city of Todi and is located on the site of the Roman forum. At the same time, it lies at the highest point in the city.

Piazza del Popolo and Todi Cathedral

Todi Cathedral stands on Piazza del Popolo and is the city’s most important Catholic religious building. The cathedral was built in the 12th century on the ruins of an existing Roman temple. The ancient forum of Todi extended beneath the present-day cathedral. This connection between different eras makes the square a particularly meaningful starting point for a cultural stay.

The cathedral’s interior is also home to an important work: on the counterfacade is a Last Judgment fresco created by Faenzone in 1596.

Renaissance, the Middle Ages and distinctive architectural forms

The Temple of Santa Maria della Consolazione is regarded as a landmark of Renaissance architecture. Its centralized layout takes the form of a Greek cross with three polygonal apses and one semicircular apse. Construction began in 1508 and was completed in 1607; the design is attributed to Donato Bramante. For visitors interested in architecture, the temple therefore offers not only a historic name but also a clearly recognizable architectural order.

Another chapter in the city’s history is represented by the Tempio San Fortunato. It was built by the Order of Friars Minor according to a design by an unknown architect from 1292 until the second half of the 15th century, and it remained unfinished. The Tempio San Fortunato also includes a Gothic bell tower dating from 1460; the old monastery with a cloister stands nearby. The complex shows how long construction periods and different medieval architectural elements overlap in Todi.

Museum, Casa Dipinta and art in the landscape

The Museo civico e Pinacoteca preserves the historical memory of the Todi area. In the Casa Dipinta, the fully frescoed interior is considered a special feature; the old Ogham alphabet, which was used in Ireland until the 7th century, is also depicted there. Together, these two places complement the major churches with smaller, distinctive approaches to cultural history.

In Beverly Pepper Park, the sculpture benches known as “lunettes” bring art and landscape together. They are viewpoints where you can admire the artworks and the landscape. This part of Todi therefore appeals not only to visitors interested in architecture and history, but also to anyone who wants to discover the character of a place through its connection between art and surroundings.

Festive impressions and getting there

During the Disfida di San Fortunato, costumed processions take place on Piazza del Popolo and flag bearers perform.

Todi can be reached by car via the Autostrada del Sole: coming from the north, take the Valdichiana exit; from the south, take the Orte exit and then continue on the E45 to the Todi exit. The Ferrovia Centrale Umbra connects Todi with several places in Umbria, including central Perugia, Perugia Ponte San Giovanni and Terni.
