Vernazzano Basso: Leaning Tower, Forest Trails and Lake Views

Vernazzano Basso offers an unusual way to experience history and the landscape. The focus is on the Leaning Tower of Vernazzano: Despite its 13-degree tilt, it is supported by tie rods. Together with forest trails, olive groves, castle ruins and historic buildings, this creates a place where cultural and landscape impressions can be meaningfully combined. The Leaning Tower and the Castle of Vernazzano

The Leaning Tower of Vernazzano is the only surviving relic of a medieval castle. It stood along the old road between Perugia and Florence via Cortona. Today, the tower rises above a ravine from the ruins of the walls of this old castle.

From the village of Vernazzano, a 20-minute forest trail also leads to a viewpoint at the Leaning Tower of Vernazzano, where the view extends across the lake. This means that the ascent to the older settlement and the viewpoint with lake views can be considered two different walking destinations. For planning purposes, you can therefore choose between local history and a landscape experience along a forest trail.

Palaces, Castles and Islands in the Surrounding Area

Several historic destinations in the immediate area are also connected. Villa Guglielmi- Isola Maggiore, a palace, is located in the vicinity of Vernazzano Basso. The surroundings of Vernazzano Basso also include Palazzo Duca Della Corgna, a palace, Castello Isola Polvese, a castle, and Castello di Magione - Sagrivit, a castle. For days focused on culture, this creates a range of palaces and castles that places the local history within a broader day-trip setting.
