Discover Fabro: Castle, Calanchi and Truffles

Fabro combines a fortified village with a castle, the Church of San Martino, unusual landscapes and regional specialties. Its history was closely connected with that of Orvieto. Castle and history

Fabro Castle is located on a hilltop viewpoint at an altitude of 364 meters east of the Chiani River and belongs to the municipality of Fabro. Its location connects the town with the landscape along the Chiani and complements the history of the formerly fortified village.

The castle was founded around the year 1000 and restored in the 15th century and again in the 16th century. The design of the 16th-century castle was created by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger, who was born in Florence in 1484 and died in Terni in 1564.

San Martino in the center

The Church of San Martino is centrally located in Fabro in a scenic position. It was built in the 19th century and has a brick façade. The simple interior has the shape of a Latin cross with a single-nave layout and a semicircular apse, a semicircular termination.

The furnishings include a wooden relief carved in Val Gardena in 1930 depicting Saint Martin. This specific piece of craftsmanship complements the church’s architectural design.

Calanchi and the Sentiero delle Crete

The I Calanchi are located in a broad valley on the southeastern side of Fabro, in the valley of the Chiani River. The erosion of clay soils shaped this landscape. It has an almost lunar appearance and creates spectacular natural formations.

The Sentiero delle Crete begins south of Fabro’s historic center. Along the trail, visitors can observe broad valleys and narrow ridges, between which cultivated areas and the ruins of old farmhouses are located. In this way, traces of former agricultural use appear alongside the geological formations.

Dishes and truffles

Typical dishes from Fabro include Umbrichelli, Manfrengole, Porchetta, Torta al testo and Frittata al tartufo. Both white and black truffles are found in the area, including truffles in numerous private truffle grounds. This combination makes local cuisine a distinct focus when planning your trip.

The festival tradition included the Festa di San Martino, which was celebrated in Fabro as a recurring festival together with the Sagra della torta sotto ‘l foco on the second Sunday in November. In addition, the Mostra Mercato Nazionale del Tartufo e dei prodotti agro-alimentari was held in Fabro every year in November. Both former November events combined local festival traditions with regional products.
