Cesi: Churches, Fortifications and Outdoor Activities

Cesi is known as the “Terrace of the Terni Basin”. Medieval Cesi was a fortified centre with watchtowers along the mountain above the town. This makes it a destination where you can see its history in specific buildings and locations, without having to limit yourself to a single area of interest.

Churches, Art and Administrative History

For insights into cultural history, the Church of Sant’Angelo in Cesi offers a specific point of reference. It has been documented since the 11th century and preserves archaeological finds from the surrounding area. The Church of San Michele Arcangelo was built in the 11th century, stands above Cesi’s medieval town walls and partially incorporates the old bastions. At the same time, it preserves numerous archaeological finds from the area around Cesi and from Carsulae. San Michele Arcangelo is currently used as an auditorium and cultural centre.

Palazzo Contelori provides a different historical focus. During Cesi’s period of municipal independence, the 17th-century building served as the seat of the municipal administration. The Church of Santa Maria Assunta houses an altarpiece from 1308, created by the “Maestro di Cesi”. The individual dates give you a clear chronological orientation between medieval architectural history, municipal administration and art from the early 14th century.

Plateau and Outdoor Activities

Sant’Erasmo is a fortified plateau above Cesi that was inhabited between the 5th and 6th centuries BC. Exploring it therefore adds a much older settlement history than that of the medieval buildings. This means that Cesi can be viewed not only through its churches and fortifications, but also through the long history of this plateau.

Work on Cesi’s fortifications has created new paths and improved existing ones, making these places accessible and usable for visitors. The area around Cesi is suitable for outdoor activities such as mountain biking, e-bike riding, trekking, climbing and paragliding. If you would like to combine exercise and culture, you can divide your days between historic sites, the paths that have been made usable and sporting activities.

Access to the underground passageways and tunnels in Terni is through an artificial passage in Palazzo Stocchi.
