Fornole Between Local History and Landscape

Fornole carries its history not only in its name: since antiquity, the place has been known as “Castrum Fornoli”. The name Fornole is derived from the numerous ovens and kilns that have existed in the area since antiquity. In the historic castle area, the geometric layout of the old castle, with its parallel and straight streets, is still clearly recognisable. The Chiesa di San Pietro Apostolo is located in the historic centre of Fornole. San Silvestro: Park, Church and Path

The vegetation of Parco San Silvestro includes juniper, strawberry tree, broom, holm oak, oak, downy oak and manna ash. The wildlife includes squirrels, foxes, porcupines, badgers, roe deer and wild boar; the park is also associated with green woodpeckers, blackbirds, wood pigeons, owls, falcons and hoopoes. Church History and Local Tradition

Architectural fragments indicate that a place of worship already existed in San Silvestro in the 9th century. The foundation of the Chiesa di San Silvestro is attributed to the Carolingian period. Local tradition is closely connected with the life of Saint Sylvester: a small cave near the Chiesa di San Silvestro is said to have been the hiding place of the tamed dragon. A central fresco in the church depicts Saint Sylvester holding the dragon on a chain. This combination of sacred history, architectural traces and storytelling tradition shapes the cultural character of San Silvestro.

Monte San Silvestro and Hiking

Monte San Silvestro rises within the municipality of Amelia near its eastern boundary and dominates the town and the Amerina state road northeast of Fornole. A trek entitled “Trekking tra gli Ulivi Secolari” was announced for 16 November 2025 as a 6.5 km hike with an elevation gain of 200 m, starting from Fornole and passing through the hills between Fornole and Montecampano.

Acciaccata and Local Flavour

Acciaccata is a thick pizza baked in a wood-fired oven under the embers and is considered a typical product of the village of Fornole. The 47th edition of the Sagra dell’Acciaccata was announced in Fornole.
