Poggio di Otricoli: Fortress, Hiking Trails and Chiesa di San Nicola

Poggio di Otricoli between the fortress and woodland landscape

Poggio di Otricoli combines a distinctive architectural history with a landscape of wooded hills and the summit of Monte San Pancrazio. The fortress of Poggio di Otricoli is an imposing square tower from the 14th century, built at the highest point of the town. In the Poggio area, a signposted network of trails leads through holm oak, pine and strawberry tree forests to the summit of Monte San Pancrazio at an elevation of 1,027 m. For day planning, two main focuses can be defined by specific destinations: the fortress and the Chiesa di San Nicola represent the history of the town, while the trail network leads through the forests to Monte San Pancrazio.

Local history and sacred architecture

Poggio di Otricoli was first mentioned in writing in 1237 under its former name, Castrum Podii Medii.

The Chiesa di San Nicola stands in the heart of the Castel di Poggio district of Poggio di Otricoli. It dates from the late 15th or early 16th century. Its facade features a stone portal with a round arch, a bas-relief of Saint Nicholas and a belfry gable with two arches. During restoration work, fragments of 15th-century frescoes were uncovered.

Hiking, elevations and geological history

Sentiero 645 from Poggio di Otricoli to Aravecchia and the junction with Sentiero 646 is a hiking trail approximately 5 km long, with an ascent of around 350 m. If hiking is a focus of your trip, you can factor the trail into your day planning based on its distance and elevation gain. The combination of distance and ascent makes the trail a clearly defined option for anyone who wants to structure their time in the landscape deliberately.

On the route of the Franciscan Protomartyrs, you reach Poggio di Otricoli by leaving the main trail after Poggiolo; this junction is approximately 5.5 km from Calvi. In the Poggio area, a specific route and a signposted network of trails through the forests complement each other. The ridge on which Poggio lies formed during the Pliocene and features outcrops of “retico”, considered the oldest geological substrate in Umbria. The forest, elevation and geology provide the surroundings with different points of interest for hiking and natural history.

Giornate Medioevali and regional cuisine

At the Giornate Medioevali, visitors may find displays of handicraft products as well as food stalls offering dishes from the region’s rural tradition. At the 17th edition in Poggio di Otricoli, three-day medieval performances took place, featuring wandering flag throwers, jugglers and actors, along with food stalls serving traditional local cuisine. Crafts, performances and food thus complement the architectural and landscape themes with a cultural experience.
