Montefranco between history, the river park and the Via del Ferro

Montefranco combines impressive traces of the past with landscapes and activities around the Nera River Park. The municipal area lies within the Nera River Park; at the same time, historical traces lead from the Roman sanctuary of Monte Moro to churches, gates and former fortifications. This makes it possible to discover the town both from a cultural and historical perspective and in the great outdoors.

Historic Sites and Living Traditions

The Monte Moro archaeological site comprises the remains of a Roman sanctuary and two associated cisterns. In Montefranco’s historic center, the Rievocazione del Passaggio di San Bernardino da Siena depicts medieval life with recreated craft workshops and performances. The event has been held every year since 1986, during the third week of May.

Among the notable historic features is the Porta Franca, preserved as one of Montefranco’s historic gates. It faces south toward Arrone and was used for the passage of duty-free goods. The outer walls of the former Bufone Castle have survived. The Church of San Bernardino was built over an old Benedictine oratory and constructed in 1454; it also preserves frescoes attributed to Orlando Merlini.

Church Art from the Middle Ages to the Baroque

The Church of Santa Maria Assunta has medieval origins and was expanded to three naves in the 15th century. Inside, there is a richly carved baptismal font. The Church of Madonna del Carmine houses 17th-century frescoes from the Umbrian school, as well as a depiction of the Assumption dating from the 16th century.

Nature and Activities in the Nera River Park

Montefranco also appeals to travelers who want to combine activity and landscape. In the part of Montefranco within the Nera River Park, rafting is available. Caving excursions are also among the outdoor activities offered in the municipal area. There are opportunities for sport climbing and free climbing on equipped natural and artificial rock faces.

On its northern slope toward the Via Flaminia, Monte Moro offers a viewpoint overlooking the valley of the Fosso Lavatore. A route from Montefranco to Monte Moro is considered an exploration of the Via del Ferro. This old route once connected Monteleone di Spoleto with Scheggino in the Nera Valley. Summer Cuisine and Local Festivals

The gastronomic tradition also has a fixed date on the calendar: the Sagra della Pizza sotto lu foco is a summer food festival in Montefranco, held from July 19 to July 28 and from August 1 to August 4.
