Monteleone D'orvieto: Old Town, Panoramas and Umbrichelli

Monteleone d'Orvieto combines a historic town center with sweeping views and a landscape of forests, streams, vineyards and olive groves. The area is part of the Territorial System of Natural Interest of Monte Peglia and Selva di Meana (S.T.I.N.A.). From Monteleone d'Orvieto, views extend across the Val di Chiana and parts of Umbria, Tuscany and Lazio.

Historic Town Center with Views

A historic walking tour leads through the old town from Porta Nord via the Torrione to Porta Sud. The route passes through narrow lanes and across squares, with stops at panoramic viewpoints. The Torrione marks the end of the historic center with a panoramic terrace offering a 200-degree view over the Valdichiana. The clock tower was built at the end of the 19th century from bricks produced by local brickworks, based on a design by the architect Filidio Lemmi, who came from Monteleone. Its façade features a monumental brick relief bearing the coat of arms of Monteleone.

Churches, Art and Local History

The parish church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul was the center of life in the first settlement of the castle of Monteleone d'Orvieto. Its altarpiece is attributed to the school of Pietro Vannucci (Perugino). The body of the martyr Saint Theodore is kept in the crypt. The Chiesa del Santissimo Crocefisso dates from the 17th century; it was reopened for worship on August 15, 2004. In the Church of Sant’Antonio da Padova, the Museo Parrocchiale preserves ancient liturgical furnishings from churches in the parish territory.

Routes for Different Interests

The Grande Anello dell'Orvietano (GAO), among other routes, passes through Monteleone d'Orvieto. The challenging trekking route is divided into 11 stages with a total length of 168 kilometers and can be completed on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback. The area also offers outdoor routes of varying lengths and difficulty levels for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and quad biking.

Traditions from Parades to Cuisine

The Corteo Storico is a historical parade featuring medieval costumes. It is inspired by the rivalry between two leading families associated with the castle. A local culinary tradition takes center stage at the Sagra degli Umbrichelli: The festival was first held in 2006 to celebrate Monteleone's and Umbria's popular handmade pasta in general, and was part of La Rimpatriata. Umbrichelli, Umbricelli, Strangozzi and Pici are names for a simple pasta dish from the culinary tradition of Monteleone d'Orvieto.

Special Events and Music

At the Presepio Vivente di Monteleone d'Orvieto, visitors can see and touch historical clothing and original tools from the period depicted along the route to the Nativity grotto. The experience also includes live domestic and pack animals as well as traditional livestock, demonstrations of traditional crafts and tastings of typical local products, including the famous Monteleone anise biscuits. During the Presepio Vivente di Monteleone d'Orvieto 2026, traditional crafts, workshops and costumed performers are brought to life in the town's historic squares, cellars and lanes. The Centro di Documentazione Musicale “Attilio Parelli” is located in the premises of the municipal library of Monteleone d'Orvieto. It is open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.
