Porano between Etruscan Heritage and Medieval Walls

San Biagio and Art in the Historic Centre

The Church of San Biagio preserves several tangible testimonies to its long history. These include two 14th-century frescoes from the School of Orvieto. The church also has a marble holy water font created by Rutilio Laurenzi in 1608. In the sacristy there is a 15th-century processional cross. The three different objects bring together mural painting, marblework and sacred furnishings. The Tomba degli Hescanas in Its Landscape

The Tomba degli Hescanas is not an isolated structure but is carved into the tuff of a small wooded hill. The Montacchione stream flows at its foot. A monumental dromos, or gently sloping corridor, leads to the burial chamber and is approximately 16 metres long. The Tomba degli Hescanas is also one of the few painted tombs in the Orvieto area that have been preserved on site. It is precisely the combination of tuff, wooded hill, stream and painted funerary architecture that makes this place interesting for visitors who wish to consider archaeological history and landscape together.

Villa Paolina, Park and Ecomuseum

Villa Paolina is located in the surroundings of Porano. It is an 18th-century architectural complex with avenues and gardens dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. The estate is considered one of the region’s particularly significant historic parks. The Ecomuseo del Paesaggio degli Etruschi is based in the park of Villa Paolina, specifically at the CEA-Centro Visite PAAO. From there, the Ecomuseum conducts natural history and historical-archaeological workshops. The Associazione ACQUA offers guided tours of the historic garden and the villa’s palace. Cultural and sporting events are currently also held at Villa Paolina. This brings together a garden, architecture, Etruscan history and current event use in one place.

Teatro di Santa Cristina, Castel Rubello and Orvieto

The Teatro di Santa Cristina is an old church that was converted into a small theatre with 150 seats. In the second building complex of Castel Rubello, a large fireplace and frescoes by Lombardelli have been preserved. The Museo Archeologico di Orvieto offers another way to engage with the Etruscan visual world: the frescoes from the Golini tombs, removed for conservation reasons, are displayed there in a reconstruction. This reconstruction opened in February 2020, reproduces the size and floor plan of the two tombs, and was curated by Paolo Ballerani.
