Narni between Rock, Walls and the Nera Landscape

Narni combines a striking historic setting with experiences that go far beyond a classic city visit. The historic settlement lies on a rocky spur overlooking the Nera Gorge and the Terni basin. The medieval town is enclosed by walls, while the Rocca Albornoz dominates Narni from the city’s highest point.

Underground History and Accessible Interpretation

A special route into the past leads to Narni Sotterranea. There, a guided tour provides insights into the underground spaces and lasts between 75 and 90 minutes. Audio guides are available in English, French and German. The underground spaces of Narni Sotterranea are accessible to wheelchair users, blind visitors and deaf visitors by prior reservation. This visit may therefore be of interest to you both because of its historical perspective and because of the forms of interpretation offered.

Another focus is the Centro Visite in Stifone. Interactive exhibitions, videos and explanatory panels present the historical and ecological heritage there. In addition, the Centro Visite offers educational programs on local biodiversity and the conservation of natural resources. Narni and its surroundings can thus be experienced from two perspectives: through the hidden spaces of the city’s history and through the natural habitats along the water.

Art, Festival Traditions and Historic Sites

Narni’s cultural offerings include the Pinacoteca in Palazzo Eroli. It displays works from the 14th to the 18th century. The Rocca Albornoz, by contrast, provides a clear spatial point of reference: it is located at the highest point of the city and shapes the view of Narni simply through its position.

History comes alive during the Corsa all’Anello, a recurring historical equestrian and festival event in Narni. La Sfida takes place on the second Sunday in May, and La Rivincita at the beginning of September. The events are held in Narni’s historic center; the equestrian competition takes place at the Campo de li Giochi. Paths through the Gole del Nera and Travel Orientation

The Gole del Nera offer opportunities for exercise in the landscape. Visitors can walk and cycle there on a combined cycle and footpath. In addition to museums, festivals and historic buildings, Narni therefore also offers a way to experience the Nera area at a more leisurely pace.
