Orvieto Scalo: Garden Paths, Cycling Routes and the Way Up to Orvieto

Orvieto Scalo is a practical yet versatile starting point for a trip that combines nature, outdoor activities, local traditions and a visit to Orvieto. Piazza Matteotti is the main departure point for buses serving the town centre and other places in the surrounding area. It is also where Orvieto’s funicular railway has a station – on the same square as the railway station. It connects Piazza Matteotti in Orvieto Scalo with Piazza Cahen in the higher part of Orvieto and takes passengers to the town centre in just a few minutes. The railway station lies on the Rome–Florence–Milan railway line.

Gardens, Tunnel and Play Equipment

A specific place for a peaceful break is the Giardino del Fosso dell'Abbadia in Via Monte Terminillo in Orvieto Scalo. The “Dai vigneti doc ai boschi selvaggi” cycling loop starts at Piazzale della Pace in Orvieto Scalo. This allows you to choose between a stage, a loop and a tour with a fixed starting point, depending on the route you prefer.

Local Traditions and Regional Cuisine

Orvieto Scalo also has a cultural side, as shown by the celebrations in honour of its patron saint, Sant'Anna. Traditional celebrations included a religious procession. During the Via Crucis in Orvieto Scalo, the procession began at the Church of Sant'Anna and returned there. The celebrations also featured food stalls offering fried dishes and fish specialities.

Another glimpse into the world of regional products was provided by TRAMErcato. This market of agricultural producers and artisans from the Orvietano area took place on Saturday, 13 June, in the gardens beside the roundabout in Orvieto Scalo. Products on offer included cheese, cured meats, seasonal organic vegetables, wine, honey and extra virgin olive oil. At around 11 a.m., the producers offered an aperitif for tasting the specialities available at the market. As the event took place in the past, it represents a combination of regional products, artisan production and a shared market experience.
