Travel from Terni and Orvieto

There are two clear reference points for travelling by car. From Terni, you can reach Toscolano via the SS Amerina towards Amelia and the Avigliano Umbro exit; the journey takes 25 minutes. From Orvieto, the route follows the E45 towards Terni to the Acquasparta exit; the journey takes 40 minutes. Toscolano can therefore be reached both from the Terni area and from the direction of Orvieto.

The “Pila Thinkerwiller” Artwork

A distinctive cultural feature is the permanent artwork “Pila Thinkerwiller”, installed at two locations in Toscolano. It consists of two engraved plates, one made of copper and one of zinc. The plates are mounted at the northern and southern ends of the town of Toscolano. The copper plate contains a collection of ideas gathered by the artist from the residents of Toscolano during the artist’s stay in the town.

Madonna dell’Annunziata Outside the Town Centre

Slightly outside the town centre of Toscolano, in the municipality of Avigliano Umbro, stands the single-nave church of Madonna dell’Annunziata. Inside, visitors can see a large fresco, a “Maestà”, which Federico Zeri attributed to Piermatteo d’Amelia and dated to approximately 1481–1483. For visitors interested in culture, the combination of the precise location, the fresco and its art-historical attribution is particularly interesting.

Sant’Apollinare by the Entrance Gate

Sant’Apollinare stands directly behind Toscolano’s entrance gate and forms part of the distinctive walls surrounding the castle. Inside is a painting of the Madonna del Rosario with the saints and the Mysteries. The painting is dated 1593 and attributed to Pietro Paolo Sensini. In addition, the relics and archaeological finds from the mid-17th century can be viewed there by prior appointment.
