Historical layers around San Marino

The settlement of Settano developed during Roman times. The settlement of San Marino, on the other hand, did not develop until the beginning of the 19th century, as a result of the gradual decline of Palazzo Bovarino. Palazzo Bovarino is considered to have been the former residence of the Counts Bovarini, also known as Bovaccini.

Evidence of settlement dating back to the Etruscan period can also be found in the area around San Marino. Reused Volsinian cippi, originating from Monte Melonta and incorporated into several old buildings in the area, support this view.

Nature trails with panoramic views

The Elmo–Melonta Trail runs through the Elmo–Melonta natural area, which is considered an area of great natural and ecological interest. Monte Melonta is considered one of the best vantage points in the entire Monte Peglia range. It begins immediately north of the bridge on the road from San Faustino to San Marino. The trail reaches Podere Melonta I, the ruins of a farmhouse on the ridge offering panoramic views over the surrounding forests of Elmo and Melonta. It also continues as far as the Chiani River. In this way, the route connects the natural area with the ridge and the river along a single course.

La Foresta dell’Elmo can be reached via the SP 101 and a turnoff to San Marino. The trail is 12.4 kilometres long; walking time is 3 hours and 30 minutes. Anyone including the trail in their daily planning should allow a continuous time slot of 3 hours and 30 minutes.

Fulignano and nature education activities

Fulignano, near the San Marino hamlet in the municipality of San Venanzo, has been set up to receive visitors to the protected natural area and the adjoining circular trail. The circular trail adjoining Fulignano’s visitor facilities partly borders the integral reserve. Fulignano is also intended to host nature education activities both with and without overnight stays. The distinction between activities involving an overnight stay and those without an overnight stay is relevant when planning the duration of the stay.

San Marino is associated with a route called “Palazzo Bovarino – San Marino”. In addition, the Festa dello Sport is scheduled to take place on the penultimate Sunday in August in San Marino; it is organised by the GIOCO-SPORT SAN MARINO association. The penultimate Sunday in August represents a specific date to include in travel planning for the Festa dello Sport.
