Torri del Benaco: History Between Lake and Highland Landscape
Torri del Benaco between the lake, history and highland trails
Torri del Benaco is a destination for you if you want to combine nature observation, active excursions and an established cultural history during one stay. Between the lake, high-altitude areas and historic buildings, you will encounter very different themes: an acrobatic course on steel cables, forests in an area considered rich in wildlife, as well as evidence of human presence that can be traced back to around 2000 BC. This range helps you explore the area according to your own travel rhythm and choose the location of your accommodation to suit your priorities.
Landscape and nature around the town
The entire municipal area of Torri del Benaco is designated as being of special public landscape interest pursuant to Law No. 1497 of 29 June 1939. In the high-altitude areas around Pai and Albisano, there are forests of hop hornbeams, downy oaks, holm oaks and ash trees; they are considered rich in wildlife such as foxes, hares and badgers. The peaks of Monte Castello di Gaino, Punta di Naole and Cima Comer are also located in the surroundings of Torri del Benaco. This places nature and high-altitude experiences alongside the town's cultural and historical themes.
A course with two time frames
The Ponte tibetano Torri del Benaco is a 34-metre-long acrobatic course on steel cables running approximately 30 metres above the ground. The standard route takes around two hours; the additional route via the Via ferrata del Bunker takes three hours. The two different time frames can be taken into account when planning your day if you want to combine an active excursion with further impressions of Torri del Benaco.
Archaeological traces and distinctive stones
Archaeological excavations in 1978 uncovered decorated pottery and flint objects from the Bronze Age. Rock carvings from the Bronze Age and even earlier periods are visible between Torri del Benaco and Garda. The largest number of rock carvings is located in Brancolino, within the municipality of Torri del Benaco. The Great Rock in the Crero area is the largest stone among those on the Veronese shore of Lake Garda.
Castles, towers, frescoes and museums
Castello Scaligero is a castle in the vicinity of Torri del Benaco and is presumably of Roman origin. The Museo del Castello Scaligero preserves evidence of life on the lake, including traditional fishing techniques and olive-growing traditions. The Torre di Berengario dates from the 10th century and was part of the Rocca (Trincerò). The Chiesa della Santissima Trinità was built in the 14th century; it preserves several well-preserved 15th-century frescoes. The Chiesa Parrocchiale dei Santi Pietro e Paolo is easily accessible to everyone. The Vittoriale degli Italiani, the Museo dell'olio and the Limonaia Pra de la Fam are also located in the surroundings of Torri del Benaco. In the wider regional area, there is Parco Natura Viva, a zoo.
Choose the right focus for your stay
When choosing a hotel, you can therefore first decide which aspect of Torri del Benaco should define your stay. The rock carvings, towers, church and museums suggest a cultural and historical focus; high-altitude areas, peaks and the course offer a different way to structure your days. Combining both sides leaves room for an individually planned stay without requiring you to commit to just one way of travelling.
