Cavalo can be discovered via two different approaches: through Chiesa Vecchia and via the hiking trail to Monte Pastello. For you, the town combines architectural history with an ascent route. Depending on your interests, you can incorporate cultural details and physical activity into your travel plans. The two approaches suit different day plans: the church and the lavatoi belong to the town’s history, while the hiking trail focuses on physical exertion with the ascent to Monte Pastello.

Chiesa Vecchia: Architectural history spanning several periods

Chiesa Vecchia di Cavalo is a 15th-century building. It was constructed over an older Romanesque church, traces of which have been preserved. Outside the built-up area, it stands on the road toward Monte di Sant'Ambrogio di Valpolicella. Chiesa Vecchia di Cavalo di Fumane also contains a Roman altar dedicated to the goddess Lualda, a deity of the ancient Arusnati.

I lavatoi di Cavalo di Fumane

I lavatoi di Cavalo di Fumane are an imposing, almost 10-metre-long fountain with a public washhouse. The facility served to collect drinking water and for public washing; the lavatoi have also always been an important landmark in the town.

Hiking trail Da Cavalo al Monte Pastello

The Da Cavalo al Monte Pastello hiking trail begins at the parish church of Cavalo. It leads uphill through the historic town centre in a westerly direction to Contrada Piazzi and from there to a viewpoint. The starting point is therefore at a specific location in the town, before the route turns into an ascent. For planning purposes, the trail can initially be viewed as a route through the town, followed by an uphill section.

The trail follows CAI Route 238 to the summit of Monte Pastello at an elevation of 1,112 metres. A two-metre-high stone cross stands there. The trail from Cavalo to Monte Pastello climbs approximately 570 metres in elevation, is considered the most demanding route in the series and is suitable for people with good physical fitness.

The trail connects the historic town centre, the viewpoint and the summit of Monte Pastello. For a trip focused on nature and physical activity, Cavalo therefore provides a starting point for a challenging mountain route. For travel planning, the tour is a different choice from the walk to Chiesa Vecchia and the lavatoi: it focuses on the route and the physical exertion involved.
