Due Carrare Between Culture and Landscape

Due Carrare brings together museums, villas, historic sites and landscapes to create a diverse range of travel experiences. The Museo del Volo opened on 20 September 1980. Its thematic sections trace the history of flight and give the visit a clear cultural and historical focus.

Near Due Carrare are the Castello di San Pelagio, the Museo dell'Aria and the Castello del Catajo. The surrounding area also includes the natural arch Arco Vallaresso, the Villa Malipietro Gosetti detta Villa Alice and Parchetto Mattei. Monte Venda is located near Due Carrare, while Monte della Madonna belongs to the wider regional area. The selection therefore ranges from built cultural attractions to distinctive landscape features.

Pontemanco: Mill District and Canal

The Borgo di Pontemanco has a distinctive historic structure. It developed as a symmetrical settlement consisting of two village centres on opposite banks of the Biancolino. One of the two mill buildings has been preserved in the historic mill district. Among other features, six gear pits and an old granary have been restored.

The embankments along the Pontemanco canal can be explored on foot and by bicycle. In places, they run alongside the Ciclabile del sale e dello zucchero. Anyone wishing to explore Due Carrare by bicycle or on foot will find here a direct connection between waterways, settlement history and regional routes.

Villas, Churches and Works of Art

The Abbazia di S. Stefano houses the suspended mausoleum of Marsilio da Carrara. It is attributed to Andriolo de Santis and was created around 1338. Palazzo Tondello has a portico with seven arches on octagonal brick columns beneath a loggia with eleven small arches.

The buildings of Villa Priuli Petrobelli are currently not open for interior visits. However, the villa can be circumnavigated on foot along its exterior: from the façade via Piazza Norma Cossetto and along the surrounding walls to Via Don Tecchio. The villa was recently attributed to a design by Vincenzo Scamozzi dating from 1597. The Chiesa di S. Giorgio also houses a gilded wooden figure of Saint George defeating the dragon; it was used as a processional float.

Villa Capodaglio is opened to the public by prior appointment on the occasion of events and wine tastings held by the villa’s agricultural business. For those interested in regional wine culture, the Mincana agricultural estate belonging to Villa Dolfin is also of interest: it covers around 57 hectares, including 18 hectares of vineyards, and produces and sells wine.
