Padua combines impressive frescoes, religious architectural history, routes along the water and regional food culture. If, for your trip, you would like to consider culture, faith, nature and everyday life in an Italian city together, you will find several distinct points of connection here.

Frescoes and architectural history

The Palazzo della Ragione is one of Padua's notable historic buildings. Its construction began in 1218; it is also one of the largest unsupported halls in Europe. Inside, the Palazzo preserves a medieval astrological fresco cycle with 333 panels. Today, the building serves as a venue for exhibitions and cultural gatherings and retains a central role in the public life of Padua.

The Scrovegni Chapel was frescoed by Giotto between 1303 and 1305. The scenes depict episodes from the life of the Virgin Mary and Christ and culminate in a monumental Last Judgment. The Padova Urbs picta series includes, alongside the Scrovegni Chapel, seven other monuments with significant pictorial works of comparable artistic value. A new access building with an air-conditioned waiting room also enables larger visitor flows to enter and protects the delicate frescoes.

Churches, medicine and archaeology

The Basilica del Santo was built from 1231 onward as an extension of the old chapel that contained the mortal remains of Saint Anthony. Giotto decorated the chapel in the Basilica del Santo now known as the Cappella delle Benedizioni with frescoes in the first decade of the 14th century. The Oratorio di San Giorgio was completely frescoed by Altichiero da Zevio with scenes from the life of Jesus, as well as stories about Saint George, Saint Lucy and Saint Catherine.

The Basilica di Santa Giustina was built as a cemetery basilica in honor of the martyr Giustina of Padua. Its architectural history begins in the early Christian period and continues uninterrupted beyond the Renaissance. In Padua, you therefore encounter different layers of religious and architectural history, without the buildings being reducible to a single era.

The MUSME is located in the monumental complex of the former Ospedale di San Francesco Grande, Padua's first municipal hospital, which was built in 1414. It presents the history of medicine from an ancient discipline to modern science, with a particular focus on the medical school of Padua. A traditional collection of artifacts is combined with a modern Science Centre; ancient finds, interactive exhibits, videos and multimedia games explain the secrets of the human body in the order in which they were discovered over the centuries.

The Museo Archeologico documents the continuity of settlement in the area of Padua from prehistoric times to the Roman period in 14 halls. This provides a broad range of options for planning your trip: you can explore individual fresco works in greater depth, examine sacred architecture or trace the development of human settlements and medical knowledge.

Routes, water and plant life

The Cammino di Sant'Antonio is a 25-kilometer route between Camposampiero and Padua that traces Saint Anthony's final journey. The route is almost entirely a walking trail. Pilgrims who complete the Cammino di Sant'Antonio receive a Latin certificate bearing the rector's signature in the sacristy of the Basilica.

The Anello fluviale di Padova is an easy walk that begins at the Porte Contarine and reaches the Scrovegni Chapel shortly afterward. The route then follows the artificial, 11-kilometer-long Piovego Canal, the Venetian city walls and the university district. It then runs along the San Gregorio and Scaricatore canals. Alongside the densely concentrated cultural sites, this provides a route shaped by canals, walls and the urban landscape.

Its greenhouses simulate tropical, subhumid, temperate and arid climate zones. Around 1,300 plant species are cultivated there, representing the plant life of our planet.

Market, arrival and choosing your location

The Mercato Sotto il Salone is located beneath the Palazzo della Ragione and is considered the oldest trading center in the city of Padua. There you will find a wide selection of local and regional products, including cheese, cold cuts, ham, meat, fish, wine, fruit and vegetables.

From Padua railway station, the city center can be reached easily on foot. This provides a practical connection between the station and the center for planning your day. If you are looking for a hotel in Padua, you can align your priorities with the experiences described: frescoes and churches, the Cammino di Sant'Antonio, the waterways, the Garden of Biodiversity or the Mercato Sotto il Salone. This keeps your accommodation decision focused on your itinerary without attributing particular qualities to individual properties.
