Teolo between hiking trails, art and pilgrimage

Teolo combines hiking routes, striking rocks, pilgrimage sites and contemporary art to create a diverse destination. Here, you can combine a longer mountain route with cultural stops or choose individual paths and sights according to your own daily rhythm.

Hiking trails with different focuses

Trail No. 17, Sentiero del Monte della Madonna, follows the old path that the inhabitants of Teolo used to reach the Santuario della Madonna del Monte. Alta Via No. 1 begins near the church of Villa di Teolo, is approximately 40 kilometres long and requires about 12 hours of walking. Sentiero Colli Euganei Centrali No. 2 begins near the hamlet of Case Zuccato in Villa di Teolo and extends for approximately 15 kilometres. The Anello del Giubileo also includes cycle paths and easy-to-walk unpaved paths. Anello del Giubileo No. 26 begins near the car park of the Abbazia di Praglia.

From the ridge of Monte Fasolo, Alta Via No. 1 offers panoramic views of the surrounding Euganean Hills of Gemola, Rusta, Cero, Castello, Cecilia, Ricco and Ventolone. Sentiero Colli Euganei Centrali (No. 2) leads to the ruins of Castello di Speronella on Monte Pendice; there, a wide terrace offers a view of the further course of the trail.

Rocks, climbing routes and protected nature

Hiking trail No. 21, “I sentieri di Rocca Pendice”, begins at the car park of the Teolo cemetery and reaches the ruins of Castello di Speronella via a safety chain, protective equipment on the overhangs and an iron access staircase. Sasso delle Eriche is a volcanic rock face on the southern slope of Monte Grande and can be reached via two main routes: one begins in the centre of Villa di Teolo, the other at Passo delle Fiorine. Climbing routes equipped with bolts and pitons are available there for all levels of difficulty.

Peregrine falcons breed at Rocca Pendice every year. For this reason, climbing and abseiling on the eastern face are prohibited in May and June. The rare small fern species Asplenium Foresienze grows between the rock crevices on the northern slope and is listed as “highly endangered” on the regional Red List.

Art, monastery and pilgrimage

The Museo di Arte Contemporanea Dino Formaggio is located in the Palazzetto dei Vicari, an administrative and military building of the Republic of Venice dating from the late 16th century. The Museo Dino Formaggio preserves around 200 paintings and sculptures by approximately 87 artists from the late 19th century to the present day.

The church of the Abbazia di Praglia, dedicated to the Assumption, was built according to a design by Tullio Lombardo, with a Latin-cross floor plan and three naves. During an announced guided tour of the cellar of the Abbazia di Praglia, wine tastings with snacks prepared by the monastery kitchen were to be offered.

The Santuario del Monte della Madonna houses a 14th-century polychrome stone statue of the Madonna and Child, attributed to Andriolo de’Santi. The “del pellegrino” pilgrimage route begins opposite the “Baita”, leads over Monte della Madonna and reaches the Chiesetta di Sant’Antonio Abate and the Grotta di Santa Felicita.

Teolo Arte Natura combines hiking with the discovery of contemporary art and is considered suitable for everyone. On 17 January, the parish of Teolo holds the Sagra “Sant’Antonio del porseeto” at the Chiesa di Sant’Antonio Abate.
