Water Landscape and Settlement History

Bagnolo di Po is located in an area that was historically shaped by water. For long periods of the year, there were marshlands around Bagnolo di Po. This water-rich past characterizes the local history and gives the landscape a distinctive coherence: the natural environment and human settlement cannot be considered independently of one another here.

The first permanent settlements in Bagnolo di Po were made possible by two developments. In the 15th century, the Bentivoglio family carried out drainage works; in the 19th century, pumping stations were put into operation. Fossa Maestra and Tartaro

The Fossa Maestra forms the northern boundary of the municipal area of Bagnolo di Po. In this section, it flows from west to east. The watercourse is therefore both part of the local geography and a natural boundary of the municipal area.

The Tartaro River crosses the northern tip of the municipal area. It runs from southwest to northeast and influences the course of the local groundwater. Together with the Fossa Maestra, the Tartaro shows how closely the waterways are connected with the spatial form and history of Bagnolo di Po.

Villa Ariosto in Capo di Sopra

Villa Ariosto is located in Capo di Sopra. Today, it is called Maragna-Rossin and is known as “La Barchessa.” The building was constructed in the 16th century and belonged to the family of the poet Ludovico Ariosto. Those interested in architecture, local history and the connection between Italian buildings and historic families will find here a tangible historic site with several traditional names.
