Santa Giulia between the river, canals and boat excursions

Santa Giulia combines a designated day route with boat excursions on the branches of the Po. The cycling route crosses the land as far as the delta; the excursions follow the waterways of the Po. Canals, locks and river landing stages complement the natural river branches with traces of water management.

Between Canals and Floodwaters

The landscape around Santa Giulia was embanked by the Sullam family and equipped with canals, locks and pumps for drainage and irrigation. Its present character is therefore closely connected with the way the inhabitants have managed the water. In the past, the area was flooded a few times a year. Afterwards, the inhabitants had to work to make the land habitable again. The embankments changed the relationship between the land and the river.

Cycling to Santa Giulia

For cycling travellers, the “Il Po della Gnocca in bicicletta” route is a clearly defined way to include Santa Giulia in a day stage. For a day trip, this route combines cycling with the landscape around the Po delta near Santa Giulia. The route is designated as a one-day itinerary from Ca’ Tiepolo to Santa Giulia. Its destination is a bridge built on barges near the mouth of the Po della Gnocca. The connection between the starting point, the river mouth and the bridge gives the route a specific landscape setting. Boat Excursions on the Po di Gnocca

A guided boat excursion starts at the small harbour of Santa Giulia and travels along the Po di Gnocca to the Sacca degli Scardovari. Santa Giulia is also the starting point for the journey along the final section of the Po della Donzella; this section is usually called the Po di Gnocca. The excursion “Alla scoperta della magia dell’Isola dei Gabbiani” lasts 2 hours and 30 minutes. The meeting point is at the Santa Giulia river landing stage on the SP 83 in Porto Tolle. From there, the excursion passes through a labyrinth of reeds to the sandbank known as “Isola dei Gabbiani”. Lasting 2 hours and 30 minutes, the excursion has a clearly defined duration.

A Place Name with a History

The name of the place also refers to its past. Until 1934, Santa Giulia was known as “Polesine dei Sospiri”. The Locatelli family changed the former name of the village to Santa Giulia in honour of one of their sisters. Together with the history of the embankments, this creates an image of a place whose present name and landscape point to different chapters in its development.
