From the Early Settlement to the Piazza

The history of Castelguglielmo dates back to the 10th century. During this early period, Villa Manegii probably also included neighboring San Bellino. This early settlement phase included a castle and a church dedicated to Saint Nicholas, “San Nicolò”.

The earliest record of the settlement therefore dates to well before 1483.

Another important historical landmark is the former castle of Castelguglielmo. It was destroyed and rebuilt several times over the centuries. Only the foundations have survived, now covered by the buildings around the piazza. The present-day buildings therefore stand directly above the remains of the former complex.

In 1483, the former castle appeared as a ring of walls with a central tower on a raised embankment. This embankment was surrounded by the waters of the Tartaro, the former name of the Canalbianco. The town’s historical development therefore remains closely connected to its location on the water.

Churches, Villas, and Visible Border History

There are also specific historical points of interest outside the former castle complex. The parish church of “S. Nicola di Bari” dates back to the 11th century. In the municipality of Castelguglielmo, Villa Paiola, also known as “Il Palazzon”, is one of the Venetian villas of artistic, historical, architectural, and landscape interest. The alternative name “Il Palazzon” refers to Villa Paiola. In Alberazzi, the tuff-stone bas-relief “Leone di San Marco” is still visible at the former border with the Duchy of Ferrara. The relief in Alberazzi complements Villa Paiola with a reference to the former border with the Duchy of Ferrara.

Local culture also includes the Biblioteca Civica Comunale “MATTIA BORTOLONI”. It offers cultural initiatives, meetings, exhibitions, and publications through which local tradition can be discovered and promoted.

The Sagra di San Gaetano is a regular fixture in the annual calendar. The recurring festival takes place in Castelguglielmo in the days around August 7. Volunteers support the event with traditional dishes and local specialties. The August date provides a clear timeframe for attending the festival during your stay.
