Santuario della Madonna Nera

The Santuario della Madonna Nera dates back to 1523. It received its present name after a fire blackened the Madonna and Child icon venerated there. During the First World War, the sanctuary was used as a hospital and housed the American writer Ernest Hemingway. The hospital use and Hemingway’s stay belong to a later historical phase than the sanctuary’s creation.

Abbey and Historic Architecture

The Santa Maria del Pero Abbey dates back to the 10th century AD. Santa Maria di Pero is considered the oldest building in Monastier. Today, only the main façade, the wall adjoining the monastery, and the bell tower remain of the former abbey.

The Villa Stefani, Albrizzi architectural complex in the municipality of Monastier di Treviso comprises a villa built by the Stefani family in the 17th century, barchesse added in the 18th century, and an oratory dedicated to Saint Peter, which was consecrated in 1726. Within the complex, the villa and barchesse date from different construction phases; the oratory was added in 1726. In the hamlet of Fornaci di Monastier, the new church was structurally completed in 1927 and opened for worship on January 1, 1928.

Routes Between Churches and Landscapes

The “Ciclovia dell’Amicizia – Da Monaco di Baviera a Venezia” from Munich to Venice crosses the area of Monastier di Treviso. A cycle path connects the Santa Maria del Pero Abbey with the Santuario della Madonna Nera and includes a stop at the Chiesa Abbaziale Santa Maria Assunta. On the “Le Vigne dei Dogi” route, a small detour before Roncade leads to the Santa Maria del Pero Abbey.

Vallio and Meolo

The Vallio River is part of the area’s natural landscape. Within the municipality of Monastier, it is affected by a Site of Community Importance (SIC) for the conservation of the natural habitat of the “Lampreda Padana”; this fish continues to live there.

The Parco Comunale di Monastier lies along the Meolo River, with approximately 54,000 m² of lawn for recreation and sport. The park has numerous fitness stations and serves as a starting point for rowing activities on the Meolo. At the Meolo, the river landscape and the park’s sporting use thus come together.
