Oderzo: Roman Traces, Art and Paths along the Monticano

Oderzo offers several clearly distinct ways to experience it: ancient urban history, sacred art, historic architecture and paths along the water. Those who do not want to plan a trip around just one theme can explore the town from different perspectives – from the Roman forum and museum collections to walking paths and a park for families.

Archaeology from the Pre-Roman Period to Late Antiquity

The Museo Archeologico Eno Bellis was opened to the public in 1881 and is now located in the Barchessa of Palazzo Foscolo. The pre-Roman section presents Venetic inscriptions, votive bronzes, zoomorphic terracottas, as well as iron and bronze horse equipment from a horse burial. The Roman section displays finds from Roman wells, stone funerary monuments from the Opitergine necropolis, valuable grave goods, bronzes and household furnishings. At the end of the tour, polychrome Late Antique mosaics are displayed that once decorated the floor of a wealthy urban domus.

Another archaeological site is the Area del Foro Romano e Domus via Mazzini. It preserves visible remains of a forum from the Augustan period. These include a paved square with a recorded width of 40 metres and a length of at least 98.7 metres. The site also contains remains associated with the urban basilica, as well as the foundation of a monumental staircase probably belonging to the city’s Capitoline temple, a temple dedicated to the Capitoline Triad.

The Domus via Mazzini preserves mosaic floors and the remains of a room heated by a hypocaust, which is attributed to the house’s thermal area.

Art and Historic Buildings

The Duomo di San Giovanni Battista preserves works by Palma il Giovane, Pomponio Amalteo and Andrea Bellunello. The Museo del Duomo presents sacred works of art and liturgical furnishings from the 16th to the 20th century. The museum includes a cycle of five paintings depicting scenes from the life of John the Baptist, created by Pomponio Amalteo in 1546 as oil paintings on canvas.

Distinctive historic features can also be found in the townscape. Casa Ottoboni-Saccomani, located on Piazza Grande, is decorated with 16th-century frescoes. The preserved historic entrance Porta di Treviso is also known as Toresin or Torresin.

Walking Paths along the Monticano

The Monticano River runs along the historic centre of Oderzo. Its embankment offers a walking path from which several routes can be accessed. This allows you to complement your stay with exercise and a quieter perspective on the town, without shifting the focus away from its archaeological and art-historical themes.

Park and Play Areas for Families

The Giardini Ca’ Diedo are a public urban park for walking, relaxing, exercising and playing with children. Facilities include swings, climbing structures, wooden rocking horses and benches. This creates a separate focus for families alongside the museum, forum and cathedral: while the historic sites place history and art at the centre, the park offers space for play, breaks and exercise.
