Portegrandi between the Sile, lock and lagoon

Portegrandi represents the connection between river, lagoon and the history of historic water engineering. A lock dating from the 17th century separates the Sile from the Venetian Lagoon. Between the Sile and the Lagoon

The Conca di Portegrandi was built around 1680 as part of the diversion of the final section of the Sile. The navigable Litoranea Veneta waterway also begins, among other places, at the Portegrandi lock and runs east from there to the Bevazzana lock in San Michele al Tagliamento. This connection makes Portegrandi interesting if you would like to understand the development of river and lagoon areas.

From the Porto Turistico di Portegrandi, you can travel towards the Venetian Lagoon and reach the islands. If you are planning excursions focused on the waterscape, this connection is one of Portegrandi's defining aspects.

Town centre and route planning

For orientation on site, the centre of Portegrandi is at street level and free of architectural barriers. The Portegrandi bus stop is just a few minutes' walk from the centre and is served by the ATVO 25A and MOM 108 interurban lines. Airone: natural history across two habitats

The Centro di Educazione ambientale Airone di Portegrandi has an educational room and a large exhibition room. The educational room presents the river environment of the Sile and the lagoon environment of the Venetian Lagoon. In this way, the connection between the two landscape areas becomes the central theme of the visit.

The large exhibition room contains specimens of fauna found in the area, including birds and reptiles. Panels focus on local habitats and on the breeding, care, protection and conservation of local, migratory and exotic bird species. The offering combines natural history with an explanatory perspective on habitats and bird conservation.

The Centro Airone's visitor offering also includes an additional 30-minute visit to the Conca di Portegrandi. Use of the Centro is available by prior reservation. Those who wish to combine both aspects can bring together the exhibition, landscape areas and historic waterworks in a thematic visit.

Islands, beach and museums in the surrounding area

There are also various landscape destinations in the surrounding area. Cason Montiron is located near Portegrandi and is an island. Motta di San Lorenzo and La Salina are located in the area and are also islands. Spiaggia del Faro is located in the area around Portegrandi and is a beach. The range therefore extends from island landscapes to the beach, without these destinations belonging to a single type of landscape.

For cultural interests, the nearby area leads to the National Archaeology Museum of Altino, a museum, and the Museo del Merletto, also a museum in the area around Portegrandi. In the wider regional area are the Palazzo Patriarcale, a palace, and the Museo Ebraico, a museum.
