Venice between lagoon, islands and Venetian culture

Venice uniquely combines a historic urban landscape with lagoon nature. The World Heritage Site of Venice and its Lagoon connects the historic city of Venice with its lagoon in the Veneto region. The historic settlement landscape of the lagoon extends from Torcello in the north to Chioggia in the south. As a semi-lacustrine habitat, it encompasses mudflats, islands, fishing villages and historic buildings that together form a coherent cultural and natural landscape.

Culture between islands and city

Those interested in Venetian culture will find distinct focal points on the islands. The Museo del Vetro di Murano was founded in 1861 and is dedicated to the island's history of glassmaking. At the Museo del Merletto in Burano, five centuries of Venetian lace-making are documented through around two hundred original laceworks. The Museo di Torcello displays archaeological finds and medieval works of art that tell the story of Venice's origins.

M9 also has its own distinctive focus: The museum tells the story of the 20th century through everyday life and major social, economic, environmental and cultural changes. Modern technologies and immersive installations are used for this museum narrative. The cultural spectrum thus ranges from traditional glass and lace craftsmanship to a contemporary portrayal of more recent history.

Lagoon landscape, coast and island character

On Pellestrina, Ca' Roman preserves one of the best-preserved dune landscapes in the northern Adriatic. Pellestrina itself has retained the character of a fishing island; in San Pietro in Volta, there is also a domestic tradition of lace-making. On the Lido di Venezia, a coastal area is recognised at national level as protected because of the importance of its breeding grounds for Kentish plovers and little terns.

For navigating between the islands, public boat transport is a central component of the destination described. Ca' Roman is served by ACTV line 11 and can be reached from the public boat landing stage in around twelve minutes. ACTV line 12 connects Venice with Murano, Mazzorbo, Torcello, Burano, Treporti and Punta Sabbioni. Nearby, there are also the Scuola di San Rocco museum, Palazzo Bianca Capello, Palazzo Tiepolo, the Palazzo Grassi museum, and the islands of Tronchetto, San Secondo, San Giorgio in Alga and Vignole.

Caorle and the northern coast

The Caorle Lagoon can be explored by bicycle and is suitable for birdwatching. Boat excursions on the motor vessel “Arcobaleno” and the bragozzo “La Serenissima” travel through the canals of the Caorle Lagoon. A characteristic feature of this landscape is the Casoni of Caorle, traditional fishermen's houses made of reeds and wood.

Caorle also has a clearly recognisable culinary profile. Typical products and ingredients of Caorle cuisine include moscardino, clams and Canestrello bianco. Lido di Jesolo presents a different coastal character, with fifteen kilometres of equipped beaches.
