Cortellazzo between the Piave Mouth and Laguna del Mort

The village began to develop after 1601, when the Serenissima completed the Cavetta Canal to improve the connections between the Venetian Lagoon and Friuli. The early settlement included a small church dedicated to Madonna del Rosario, built in 1698. The building known as the Ex Caserma di Cortellazzo was completed as part of a restoration project in summer 2024.

The history of the 20th century is also present in Cortellazzo and its surroundings. During the First World War, the town was located on the Piave Front and was the scene of one of the decisive moments of that war. Naval officer Andrea Bafile fell in combat in the port of Cortellazzo. In this part of the Jesolo area, there are several forts or casemates used by the army of the Kingdom of Italy, particularly after the defeat at Caporetto and the establishment of the Piave Front to defend the coast.

Maritime Character and Fish Cuisine

With its fishermen’s houses and the canals that still run through the town, Cortellazzo preserves the character of its maritime past. This includes a rich culinary tradition connected with fishing.
