Ceraino combines a clearly recognizable fortress history with the landscape of the Adige. Forte Ceraino is located on a plateau 236 meters above sea level, above the valley of the Adige River. In Ceraino, historical names, the river landscape and paths through the surrounding area come together – an interesting basis for a trip in which you would like to combine culture and landscape.

Forte Ceraino was built by the Austrians as a fortress between 1850 and 1851. It was initially named Forte Hlawaty. After modernization by the Italian army in 1884, the fort was given the name Forte di Ceraino. At this structure, you therefore encounter several designations in a clear chronological sequence.

Chiusa di Ceraino and Paths by the River

The Chiusa di Ceraino is located where the Val d’Adige ends at the level of Ceraino. The gorge of the Chiusa di Ceraino was carved into the rock by water erosion after the retreat of the glaciers. For those interested in landscape and geological history, it represents a separate focal point alongside the fortress.

The circular route Girovagando per Volargne begins at the church of Ceraino and reaches a section with a sandy beach on the banks of the Adige. On the way back to Ceraino, it follows a short unpaved path through vineyards. The different sections give you the opportunity to consciously take the route’s progression into account when planning your day.

Routes for Different Day Plans

Sentiero n. 240 begins near the church of Ceraino at a small parking area beside the road. After 1.5 kilometers, it reaches Forte Ceraino via an unpaved road with several hairpin bends and continues from the fort to Forte di Monte. The sequence directs your view from Ceraino via the fort onward to a second historic destination.

Route 2 Villa del Bene–Ceraino leads from Villa del Bene along an old paved path to the Adige River, through the Chiusa canyon and onward to Ceraino. In addition, the Percorso in bici Ceraino provides a specific route length of 16.65 kilometers for route planning. Trail surfaces, route layout and varying distances help you organize a day plan according to your personal interests and preferred pace.

Culture and Destinations in the Surrounding Area

The ruins of Falesia Mitria, the Museo dell'olio and Castello Scaligero are located in the area around Ceraino. The Museo dell'olio is a museum, while Castello Scaligero is a castle. Also in the surrounding area are Padri Redentoristi, a monastery, and the Parco delle Cascate waterfall. For a trip focusing on history and landscape, these places can be considered thematically together with the fortress and the Chiusa.

The Parco Natura Viva zoo is also located in the area around Ceraino. Other landscape destinations there include the peaks of Punta di Naole and Corno d'Aquilio. The range of places thus extends from ruins, a museum, a castle and a monastery to a waterfall, zoo and peaks.
